Canal Corporation soliciting bids for Pilot Embankment
       Monitoring System

The NYS Power & Canal Authority is once again looking to
Understand, Identify & Repair their safety issues with hundreds
of miles of raised earthen water impounding embankments. They
have previously put out a request for proposals to a few local
Job Bid Websites trying to find a partner for their Earthen
       Embankment Integrity Program.
Here's a link to one site, with some highlights of what the
Pilot Embankment Monitoring System is supposed to provide.

The New York Power Authority and New York State Canal
Corporation are seeking proposals for a Pilot Embankment
Condition Monitoring System to be implemented across the New
       York State Canal System.
Firms interested in responding must demonstrate advanced
capabilities in infrastructure monitoring technologies, data
integration, and scalable monitoring solutions that can provide
real-time insights into canal embankment conditions and
       potential risk factors.
This procurement opportunity involves developing and deploying a
comprehensive monitoring system for canal embankments, with a
specific focus on condition assessment and risk management.
The project scope demands technical expertise in geotechnical
monitoring, sensor technologies, and data analysis systems
       specific to canal infrastructure.
The contract has a defined term of 1.5 years and will initially
cover counties including Monroe, Niagara, and Orleans.
Firms interested in responding must demonstrate advanced
capabilities in infrastructure monitoring technologies, data
integration, and scalable monitoring solutions that can provide
real-time insights into canal embankment conditions and
       potential risk factors.
Once again, NYPA's desire to insure that the NYS Canal System is
safe for people to use and for those who live below vast lengths
of Earthen Navigation Embankments is still alive & well.

It appears that Embankment Integrity Monitoring is a fairly well
defined set of possible monitoring solutions. Some employ a
series of sensors, placed into the earthen berm, that monitor
"moisture content" at known depths. This announcement company
that specializes in that type of reat-time Embankment Analysis.

There are also companies that provide 'sonar' true analysis of
standard earthen water impoundments. These systems are
non-intrusive and employ an imaging process to look for voids in
embankments caused by burrowing animals and lead to potential
future leakage. It would appear this is primarily used on the
outer slope of an earthen dam, and would image the earthen
portion to the inside slope of rip-rap rocks. Again there are
firms that have already developed this technology and can be
hired to check embankment Integrity on a for hire basis.

It would seem like a great start in NYPA's plan to restore
embankments to "like new" condition if they contacted one of
these firms directly to see if there is an interest in using
       them on the Erie Canal.
