Olde Erie Canal Springs a LEAK in the Oneida Creek - Durhamville
       Aqueduct

This Canal Breach was reported today by the NYS Canal
Corporation, in Oneida County near Durhamville. It appears a
concrete canal aqueduct across Oneida Creek, part of the 1850s
Erie Canal Enlargement, has failed... causing some local
flooding that will not affect public safety.

To fix the issues the Erie Canal will need to be drained for 20
miles, over the next 4 to 6 weeks, while the leak is isolated &
repaired. Should not affect any travel along the main waterway
as this is an isolated section of "original" Erie Canal, not
used for navigation. Just another of the MANY issues with a
waterway & canal system that is in desperate need of repair and
maintenance to its earthen & concrete water impounding
       structures.
Another near miss for "public safety" in the NYS Canal System,
similar to the Aqueduct at Macedon that collapsed and caused a
very long repair a few years back. Maybe it's time for the
public to start asking the right questions & demanding answers
to why the Canal System is not being maintained properly.
How long before one of these "small leaks" happens near a
populated area, causing property damage and possibly fatalities
       of the unsuspecting public?
How long before the NY Power & Canal Authority starts working to
fix their waterway problems instead of sitting on their hands
       doing nothing?
What has happened to their Canal Integrity Program that started
clearing embankments in 2018 and fizzled out after pressure from
Erie Canal Safety "denialist" on Facebook?
This is going to affect quite a few farmers in the area, who
depend on water from the Erie Canal for irrigation. Many folks
are already asking why 20 miles has to be emptied on the Canal
       Corporation Facebook page.
