Question of the Day: Why is the Canal still full in Brockport
& Western Canal Sections?

The answer is... It's all part of "reimagining" the NYS Canal
System as a NYS Autumn Destination.
After the Erie Canal System closes for Recreational Navigation
in mid-October, it opens up for the new REIMAGINE the CANALS -
Fall Fishing Program, which is spurring even more use of the
Canal System into the colder Autumn days. People are coming from
all over the country, and world, to fish the main waterways that
connect the Erie Canal to the local watershed west of Rochester
& Monroe County into Niagara County.
This program has been a huge success in the 4-5 years it's been
running, and generating more dollars into the local economy of
these local fishing spots.
The Canal Corporation lists the days that they increase water
flow & volume to by draining Canal water into 4 main
creeks/rivers... here's the 2024 schedule:

This fall fishing program normally comes to an end two weeks
into December, in 2024 the last water release will be December
15, 2024. That's when the rest of the Erie Canal will start
being emptied for it's 4 months of winter slumber. It will be
nearly empty by Christmas, to facilitate maintenance and allow
the earthen embankments to "dry out".
This 4 months is also the time allowed by the Earthen Embankment
Integrity Program to perform necessary inspections &
rehabilitation as needed.
