It appears that the work to repair the 2021 Canal Embankment
breach in the Macedon/Palmyra area is now complete, including a
brand new section of Erie Canal / Empire Trail System, that is
"off-road" after all Trail traffic was diverted on to nearby
roads after the breach, 44 months ago.
Here's our original post on this story.

This announcement came out this week, on the NYS Canal Authority
Facebook page:

While this is good news for all those using the canal trail
system, it's surely a recognition that the original Aqueduct is
still unsafe for pedestrian use, and may be well beyond saving.
Hopefully the new work on the embankment repair has held up over
time, and doesn't need to utilize the same stretch of earthen
dam that was crumbling away at the old Aqueduct.
Great work by NYS once again, the best thing that’s happened to
the Erie Canal was moving it from the jurisdiction of the NYS
Thruway to the NYS Power Authority folks. They have taken the
safety concerns along the Erie Canal Corridor much more
seriously than any of the prior caretakers, and NYPA has been
clear on where public safety is on their priority list, right at
the top.
