NYS Canal Corporation needs to comply with NYS DEC Earthen Dam
       Rules

Seems some folks still do NOT understand why the NYS Canal
Corporation & their parent, the NY Power Authority, are working
to diligently to REPAIR issues with hazardous canal embankments
and their leaking earthen dams... it's because they are REQUIRED
to, under NYS Laws. Removing invasive vegetation, repairing
unstable canal structures like these earthen embankment dams,
it's all spelled out in NY State Department of Environmental
       Conservation guidelines.

State Agencies are required to support each other, as well as
insuring the public is safe while using NYS Public Property.
This is what it looks like along the NYS Canal System.

Apparently the NYS Canal Corporation fully understands the
issues with canal safety, embankment stability, and the need to
protect New Yorkers from unsafe canal conditions.
Here's another example of "bank repairs" going on all along the
waterway, bringing lower water levels to some & trail closures
       to others.

You can read more on this Embankment Repair here:

And this area around the Mohawk River - Erie Canal has had
issues in the past with canal bank stability...

Seems that if nothing gets done soon, to restore the NYS Canal
System Embankments to 'like new' conditions, the answer from New
York State will be to simply lower canal water depths to insure
       public safety is maintained.
That means homeowners wirh docks will be left high & dry, and
all those new "ADA Compliant" Kayak Launches in most Erie Canal
       ports will be rendered useless.
It's high time the public gets BEHIND the effort to FIX the
canal system, instead of complaining about safety programs like
       the Earthen Embankment Integrity Program.
It's time to fix the biggest public safety issue in this State,
also known as the NYS Canal System.

My section of the canal, Fairport to Pittsford, has been at
least 18" lower then normal, and on some days, about 24" lower.
What I have noticed is that large areas of the edges of the
canal 'riparian' have sprouted all sorts of vegetation.
Phragmites australis, a 6-8' tall weed has sprouted up
everywhere, threatening to clog up more shallow areas and
eventually harbor a build up of other grasses like cat tails,
and turn these areas into dry land. It's going to be a nightmare
for many dock owners, unable to gain access to the water.
And why is this? All because the damned trees are hiding all the
problems on these dangerous embankments and the water has been
lowered because of safety. They should have been cut down FIVE
       YEARS ago.
And who is responsible for this fiasco? None other than
Elizabeth Agte, Ginny Maier and their misinformed fans at the
       Stop The Clear Cut brigade.

Maybe the NYS Canal Corporation will be giving Erie Canal dock
owners some help for the 'reduced water levels'... instead of
removing the invasive vegetation causing the leaking issues. You
get your choice of a 4, 6 or 8 foot step ladder... or for the
more nimble boaters, a pair of small trampolines.
Only a few weeks left for boating the Erie before it turns into
its alter ego... that's an empty ditch for the next 7 months.
Three cheers for another year of Clinton's Ditch, a NYS Treasure

Yep! And that ditch is something we have to look at every day.
It's disgusting! So many other bodies of water are great to look
at, but this is disgusting, slime, mud, plastic chairs washed
overboard, and even few shopping trolleys.
And it's all AGTE and MAIER's fault!

Two Hundred Years ago the end of Canal Season meant pulling dead
mules from the empty ditch, and having to smell that same ditch
all winter long until snow covered the stench.
And of course FIXING the issues with embankment leaking,
burrowing critters, and inoperable locks... most of that work
       continues even today.
But closing was in December back then, before the hard freeze
that turns Erie ditch water into ice.
