Rural Historia
The Lock, Rickmansworth.
The Lock in Rickmansworth, located on the Grand Union Canal in
Hertfordshire, holds an important place in the history of
British waterways. Rickmansworth has long been a strategic point
on the canal network, primarily due to its location at the
confluence of the River Colne, the River Chess, and the Grand
Union Canal.
The construction of the Grand Union Canal, originally known as
the Grand Junction Canal, began in the late 18th century, aiming
to connect London with the Midlands. The section passing through
Rickmansworth was completed in the early 19th century.
The canal and its lock system played a crucial role in the
transportation of goods, particularly coal, timber, and building
materials, between London and the Midlands during the Industrial
Revolution. The lock itself facilitated the movement of barges
by managing the water levels along the canal's route.

Looks like the bridge underpass in Brockport, at Smith Street,
same narrow lane and rounded stonework
Also worth a mention here, it's just not the canal design itself
that was influenced, but also canal boat design, the use of
mules to pull cargo, and the affect the waterway had in building
the communities it passed through.
Great bit of canal history, nice find.

If you look at the bridge walls, you'll see many grooves in the
stone. These were caused by the ropes used by the mules to pull
the barges. Some grooves were a couple of inches deep.

Of course, with Canals it's all about age & usage, and England
has some really old canals... many still in use today.

While many may "say" the Erie Canal is almost 200 years old,
that's not the ACTUAL age of the Erie Canal seen and used today.
The Erie Canal was "reimagined" in the early 20th century, and a
NEW navigation canal was created, which basically eliminated
"mule power" and relied more of steam powered vessels to ply the
waterway. While the idea of a waterway for navigation & trade
lived on in New York State, the history & romance of that early
Erie Canal gave way to a commercial waterway that only lasted
another 30 years or so, before it was abandoned for better ways
to move cargo.
New York State Canal System has spent the last half century
trying to be "REIMAGINED" as a recreational destination, which
seems to be its destiny in the 21st century. And at the same
time it has fallen into disrepair and become a public safety
issue that New York State now has to repair and make safe again
for that new purpose. New York wants the entire world to come
and enjoy the wonder of the Erie Canal, its waterway, and its
walking & biking trail.
Time will tell if that dream will become a reality... or will
the Erie Canal become just another memory someday, unable to be
opened because it's become too costly or too unsafe to operate.
