Canal Opening and Closing Dates - 2023 Navigation Season

2023 Navigation Season
January 26, 2023
The New York State Canal Corporation today announced that,
conditions permitting, all portions of the New York State Canal
system are scheduled to open Friday, May 19, 2023, at 7:00 a.m.
for the 199th consecutive season of navigation.
There are no tolls or fees for recreational use of the Canal
system this year.
Additional information about this year’s season, including hours
of operation, will be issued in subsequent Notices to Mariners.
The Canal Corporation and Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC) are continuing their collaborative effort to
mitigate the potential spread of the round goby, an aquatic
invasive species (AIS), to the Lake Champlain Basin. Mariners
may learn more about the State’s comprehensive plan and how they
may help by visiting here.

The Canal system will close to navigation on Wednesday, October
11, 2023, at 5:00 p.m.
The Canal Corporation urges all users and stakeholders to
register to receive updates through the Notice to Mariners
notification program by clicking here.

Of course these posted dates are always subject to change,
especially if the current Canal Embankment Drone Inspection
Project finds something REALLY wrong with an earthen embankment
somewhere, that causes more repairs to avoid another
"impoundment breach" like last May in Macedon

We can all remember a time when it seemed like the Navigation
season lasted longer... or we think that's true. But the NYS
Canal System has been closed more than it's open for quite a few
years now. And the longer embankment maintenance is "on hold"
and the longer that routine maintenance of the canal is "under
attack" from Facebook groups, the shorter the season will get.
As one astute person has already stated...
NY State Canal Corporation does NOT want the risk of a lawsuit,
for a "preventable tragedy", caused by an Erie Canal flood
event.
It's about public safety and risk avoidance, that's why
INSPECTION & REPAIR of the 100 year old Canal is necessary.
So enjoy the 2023 season, all 3504 hours of it...
