NYS Canal Corporation Renews Commitment to Earthen Embankment

It doesn't get any more clear than this, when it comes to NYS
Erie Canal Safety
A new Engineering job was posted to the NYS Canals Website, it
is very specific and focused on Earthen Embankment Safety. It's
become obvious, going forward, that the discussion on Erie Canal
Embankments will focus on SAFETY of these Navigation Dams, and
the safety of the PUBLIC using the NYS Canal System.
And this new job opening is centered on the western section of
the Erie Canal System, from Lockport to Lyons and the 88 miles
of raised earthen embankment dams. The western section is where
the biggest issue with public safety is locate as well as the
home of the only social media opposition to repairing these
aging earthen Erie Canal embankment dams.
Seems like a message to that group that the days of distraction,
denial and disinformation are over!
No other topic is more serious than public safety around
impounded water these days, with recent issues in other States
with collapsed and failing dams, almost all due to age.
Look for these new embankment safety & inspection jobs to be
filled before the Fall when work will start again to clear
invasive embankment vegetation and get proper inspections
performed on the Canal System, some of those for the very first
time in nearly 100 years

The new Embankment Safety job pays well, but the qualifications
are VERY focused on just 4 words:
Earthen Embankment Dam Safety
Those four words appear in almost every part of the specific Job
Duties, and the position will be the frontline for all work with
the new Canal Integrity safety effort called EEIP, that stands
for Earthen Embankment Integrity Program.

So for those who may be holding out, thinking that the NYS Canal
Corporation will stop clearing these unsafe earthen dams, this
should be a wake-up call. You don't post jobs for Hydraulic
Specialist, and Dam Safety Engineers unless you intend to
actually use those new people in the jobs they were hired for.
NYPA, and the NYS Canal Corp are hiring MORE Engineers and
Embankment Inspectors in 2022, about 10 total, in preparation
for upcoming work to repair, maintain and inspect their miles &
miles (over 125 miles total) of aging, unsafe, high hazard
earthen dams this Fall.
That's more than 75% of all the jobs posted currently on their
website

And all of these new Canal Safety jobs can't come soon enough.
Here's some recent Press Releases, from New York State Canals,
showing a few noteworthy issues with Canal Embankment Repairs
that were needed due to seepage or sinkholes.

And as many know already, the water levels from Lockport to
Macedon will be lower for the entire 2022 Navigation Season, to
reduce hydraulic pressure on these dams and hopefully slow the
seepage and decay of the canals many navigation dams.
