Work slated to fix sinkhole in Erie Canal

LITTLE FALLS — The New York State Canal Corporation on Friday
announced a concrete grouting project to stabilize the
structural integrity of the Erie Canal in the city of Little
Falls. The work will begin next week, state officials said.
The Canal Corporation and its contractor will pump concrete into
the floor of the canal between Lock E-17 and the guard gate to
fill a sinkhole and mitigate water that is seeping from the
canal into the Mohawk River.
A 1.5-mile segment of the Erie Canalway Trail, which is part of
the statewide Empire State Trail and is already detoured for
ongoing trail maintenance, will remain closed until June,
according to the announcement by state Canal Corporation
officials.
Trail users should continue to follow the signed on-road detour
route through the city of Little Falls, the Canal Corporation
announcement added.
Throughout the duration of the project, residents are likely to
notice contractors, wearing hard hats and high-visibility vests,
as well as concrete trucks and heavy equipment operating at and
near the construction site, officials said.
It is anticipated that the stabilization work will be completed
in May ahead of the canal’s opening on Friday, May 20, the
announcement added.

May 23, 2022
Mariners are advised that the navigation pool between Locks O-6
& O-7 in Oswego is scheduled to be drawn down by 2 to 3 feet
starting on the morning of Tuesday, May 24 and continuing until
the end of the day on Thursday, May 26 to accommodate
maintenance on the dam.

Maybe a few embankments along Lock 7, and the main Oswego Dam of
course.

And it has the Highest Dam Hazard Rating, built in 1855, last
inspection was 20 years ago.
All are owned by NYPA and NYS Canal Corporation, part of the NYS
Canal System and Inland Waterway

PROJECT ALONG THE ERIE CANAL IN THE TOWN OF GREECE TO BEGIN WEEK
OF MAY 30th
Repair Work Includes Pumping Grout into the Canal’s Water
Impounding Embankment to Mitigate Seepage
The New York State Canal Corporation today announced a seepage
mitigation project along the Erie Canal in the town of Greece,
Monroe County will begin the week of May 30, 2022. The Canal
Corporation and its contractor will be pumping grout into the
canal’s southern embankment approximately 1,500 feet west of
Long Pond Road to mitigate
water that is seeping through the embankment at this location.
Throughout the duration of the project, residents will notice
contractors, wearing hard hats and high-visibility vests, as
well as heavy equipment operating at and near the construction
site.
The seep being mitigated through this project is one of more
than 200 known seeps on canal earthen embankments, which
comprise approximately 125-miles of the Canal system. The Canal
Corporation continuously monitors and inspects these earthen
dams on foot via daily monitoring with our staff, as well as
using advanced technologies like drones and thermal imaging.
The work being performed along the Erie Canal in Greece has been
reviewed under a project specific State Environmental Quality
Review (SEQR) evaluation and is not part of the Canal
Corporation’s proposed Earthen Embankment Integrity Program. It
is anticipated that this work will be completed in approximately
two weeks.
The Canal Corporation appreciates the public’s patience while
this work is completed.
Here's the map of the affected area, including the Flood
Inundation Zone. That flood zone affects many residents in North
Gates and South Greece

Most likely everyone living in this area is clueless about the
danger, including a manufacturing company and medical /
professional building. That is due in part, to a social media
presence in our area, that refuses to accept the truth about
canal integrity and prefers to ignore the danger that many Erie
Canal neighbors are in, along these overgrown & uninspected
canal embankments.
That FACEBOOK group will simply term this latest warning message
about canal integrity as more fear-mongering by the NY Canal
Corporation.
They do so not at their own peril of course, as they only walk
along the canal trail and care little for the lives or property
of those who are living below the canal waterline.
Sad but true.

No comment, but it's kind of coincidental that they do seem to
fit the bill...
a social media presence in our area, that refuses to accept the
truth about canal integrity and prefers to ignore the danger
that many Erie Canal neighbors are in, along these overgrown &
uninspected canal embankments.
Does anyone else notice that the more 'transparent' the NYS
Canal Corporation & NYPA are, about their leaking earthen dams &
failing navigation embankment system, the more a certain
Facebook group starts talking about birds, blossoms and blooms?
That Facebook group, and it's leadership, have no answers to the
increase in canal embankment work lately, except to deny its an
issue, and deny it's about unsafe 100 year old, earthen dams.
They just clam up and change the conversation to some neighbor
who's taking an extra step down to their boat this year, or
pretty Amur Honeysuckle blooms...an invasive plant in our State.
It's all denial & distractions with the Stop The Canal Clear-cut
Group, and ever increasing misinformation to satisfy their
Founders
