Hello all ECNA readers, members & guests,
After recent discussions with the New York Canal Corporation,
regarding their position on making proper repairs & inspections
to Erie Canal embankments, it's become very obvious that NYPA
and the NYS Canal Corp will stop at nothing to insure the safety
of their Canal Neighbors, and surrounding canal-side
communities.
Mainly their decision will minimize risk and litigation exposure
from a possible canal flood, but it's also because of
regulations that NYPA is required to follow as a Public Utility
Provider. It's very clear that moving the NYS Canal Corporation
under the wing of the New York Power Authority, all but
guaranteed it would get the proper repair it's earthen dams
needed so desperately needed.
There is no doubt at all that NYPA and the NYS Canal Corporation
will carry out their Earthen Embankment Integrity Program work,
using their new Earthen Embankment Guidelines & SEQR study, to
insure the canal is made safe again.
And that the new "refurbished" Erie Canal will be here for many
others to enjoy 100 years from now.
With that, the work I've done to share the message of Erie Canal
safety, from embankment repair to falling trees has comes to a
close...
I've said what was needed, to the right audience (who listened)
and are now DEDICATED to the task of restoring safety to Canal
Neighbors by fixing ALL the issues that are making it unsafe
today. Thank you NYPA, thank you NYSCC, and thank you Rebecca
Hughes & Jackie Schillinger for your hard work insuring the
public was in the loop on Erie Canal Rehabilitation.
With that said, it's time for other neighbors along the Erie
Canal, to start the conversations in their own Towns & Villages.
And time for this Co-Founder to step aside to see that happen.
It's been real, and it's been fun, but like all good things,
there's a time to move on to the next adventure. That time has
come for me.

When we, Mike Caswell & I, started this Erie Canal Neighbors
Association (ECNA), Mr. Caswell and I thought that Erie Canal
neighbors needed a place to get FACTUAL information on Canal
Embankment work. We have done that and more. This Forum is a
place to share facts, science and information pertinent to
safety, along the Erie Canal. And also a place to get
information and links to websites that most folks who use the
canal already know about and use. And we have some fun along the
way.
We also thought this Erie Canal Embankment Safety "thing" would
be an easy sell, why would anyone, in their right mind, fight
against public safety?
What we thought might be a two to three year commitment of time
and money, is turning into five years now. That is because some
people, in our area, did believe fighting against public safety
in NYS, along the Erie Canal, would actually be a good idea. And
because of that I learned a new word, for my vocabulary...
Gormless. Thank you Michael again for increasing my vocabulary
with clever words from Great Britain, your original home.
The ECNA started with just this Discussion Forum, but we've gone
a step further and created the WWW.ECNA.US website. That's a
place to explore even more Erie Canal Facts, learn about the
21st century Canal System and also share information. And we
even offer a Marketplace for Canal Neighbors to utilize.
Both of these websites are well used, and normally on any given
day, there are well over 200 guests & members visiting our ECNA
domains to learn facts and share thoughts.
We have been told there are classrooms in other countries, who
log in regularly to read about the Erie Canal, and understand
how it works. And they also start to understand why the Canal
System needs to be repaired, and kept sustainable for New York
State. And they also see that dam safety is not always a topic
that "all of the public" will support, for a variety of reasons.
We see traffic on both our websites from all over the world,
depending on where our Forum discussion is trending, what topics
are being discussed.
We wanted to be a website to bring as much useful information on
the Erie Canal into one place... as possible. We have covered
canal safety, tourism, job opportunities. And yes, many just
come to read the banter on our most popular Forum board, which
stands up against misinformation being spread on Social Media
about some Erie Canal Maintenance work.
We hope the ECNA has become that source of Erie Canal
information for all, including Canal Neighbors. We have worked
hard to insure that the voice of canal neighbors was heard over
the voices of those who only use the canal property or walk
along it's trail.
The early ECNA pressured the Canal Corporation to plant a
natural privacy screening along the trail, in areas that were
affected by their initial embankment maintenance work,
especially in Brockport where canal neighbors have had to
tolerate rude Empire Trail users staring into their windows at
all hours of the day.
We also made it clear that the goal of all of the Embankment
Work was to reduce the exposure of canal neighbors to possible
canal breaches, and also insure that embankments would be
cleared to reduce the need for canal neighbors to purchase Flood
Insurance. There was a time when it looked like Flood Zone
Mapping would change to show the danger of high-hazard dams
along the Erie, and until all embankments are repaired that may
still be the case.
No Canal Neighbor wants to be told they may need Mandatory Flood
Insurance, do they?
So what you see in this ECNA Forum is the work of Erie Canal
NEIGHBORS, those of us that still need a megaphone to talk
directly to the people who own the land next to us, or behind
us, or on the other street over... that is the New York State
Canal Corporation, our shared NEIGHBOR.
So you all know, our neighbors at the NYS Canal Corporation,
watch our website often, some are even members.
If you need something, have a question, want some help with an
issue caused from living next to the Erie Canal & Trail...you
only need to start the conversation here... someone will listen.
Thank you all again for your help in this Erie endeavor, and
your patience as I muddle though a steep learning curve with
Webpage design and Forum topics. Thank you for all the memories.

But it's really up to all of you to make this Forum the BEST
resource for daily Canal News & Information. This is an "online
community" dedicated to the truth about canal safety and living
near one of the oldest operating canal systems in the world.
