NYS Canals Announces Routine Inspection of Navigation
       Embankments to Begin
   DIR By: Doug K
       Date: March 27, 2022, 8:47 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
This NYS Canal Corporation announcement came out today.
It's to let the general public know that NYS workers and
partners, will be inspecting their Earthen Embankment Dams (used
to retain water for channel navigation) starting TOMORROW, March
       28, 2022.
If the Empire Trail traffic is affected in a municipality, they
will be notified of detours or closures.
And it is notable that the NYS Canal Corporation specifically
stated that this activity is NOT PART of their ongoing Earthen
Embankment Integrity Program, or EEIP as it's known as. That
EEIP Manual & Program are still pending release this year.

  HTML https://www.canals.ny.gov/news/pressrel/2022/2022.03.25-Canals-Western-Embankment-Survey-and-Boring-Work-Press-Release.pdf
Apparently something is driving this new Dam Inspection
activity, though some folks on a Facebook group opposing
Embankment Maintenance, will say it's the EEIP work being
       disguised.
Our guess at the ECNA is that the NYS Canal Corporation is
hopeful, by stating this work is NOT EEIP related, their Canal
Inspection workers will be allowed to perform their Dam
Inspections, without being harassed by any local social media
       group members.
So what's driving this routine inspection, if it's NOT the
       Earthen Embankment Program?
That's simple, the same thing that has always been driving
increased safety-related work along the Erie Canal since 2015.
It's the watchful eye of the New York State Comptroller's
Office, and the increasing pressure from TWO past SAFETY Reports
that say the Erie Canal has become a DANGER to NY residents
(2015), and more recently, a report on the general Dam Safety
       Issues in NY State (2018)
Here's what prompted all of the recent safety work along the
       Erie Canal

  HTML https://www.osc.state.ny.us/files/audits/2017-12/sga-2015-14s45.pdf
Think of it...a 100 year old Canal System, made up of a series
of Earthen Embankment Navigation Dams, that stretches 125+ miles
across our State, and over 30% have NEVER received proper NYS
       Dam Inspections.
Here's what prompted all of the recent NYS Dam Inspections,
       again from the NYS Comptroller

So there's the FACTS & TRUTH behind why NYS Canal workers will
be performing the jobs they were asked to do, these next few
       months west of Rochester.
These Canal Employees all work hard to help keep NYS Residents
safe... give them a break if you see them, let them do their
       jobs please.
They are only trying to save our lives... And they are also
trying save the Erie Canal from ruin in the process

Re: Canal Embankment Inspection Results in Erie Trail Closure
       for Repairs in Gaines
   DIR By: Doug K

       ---------------------------------------------------------
And this was very predictable, from the last announced
       Embankment Inspection exercise.
And it didn't take the folks in the Canal Corporation very long
to find yet another safety issue along these earthen Navigation
Dams, that will result in another need to repair. Another of the
many leaks along this section of the Erie Canal System has been
       found west of Rochester.
Today, the NYS Canal Corporation announced that recent
inspection of Earthen Embankments in Orleans County revealed
issue with leakage that needs immediate repairs. The trail will
be closed, Residents are warned about Canal Work in the area of
       Eagle Harbor & Gaines Basin.

       file:///C:/Users/Kumo/Desktop/20220401-Canal-Embankment-Repair-Gaines_220401_120735.pdf
Here's the affected Erie Canal Trail section, 1.8 miles long,
and it will be CLOSED for REPAIRS starting next week.
       [attachimg=2]
When the Canal Corporation started their Canal Integrity work in
2017 they had only 27 known canal leaks that were being
monitored. Todays' announcement stated they are now watching
       over 200 leaks.
And they still have to clear hundreds of miles of their
overgrown canal embankments on both the North and South sides of
       the waterway.
Perhaps it's time to start a contest... Guess the TOTAL NUMBER
of Erie Canal Leaks that will be uncovered with their new focus
& emphasis on Erie Canal Embankment Integrity & Safety

   DIR By: Doug K
       Date: April 3, 2022, 8:42 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
And this was almost predictable, a social media group, on
Facebook, is now claiming that the NYS Canal Corporation is
causing all of the Embankment Instability issues themselves.
They say is because of all the heavy equipment on the canal
trail during the Embankment Maintenance process
  HTML https://ecna.createaforum.com/the-stop-the-clearcut-argument/can-using-a-social-media-website-make-you-stupid-the-data-says-yes!/msg2115/?topicseen#msg2115
And one of the founders of this Facebook group wants answers
  HTML https://ecna.createaforum.com/the-stop-the-clearcut-argument/stcc-leader-ginny-maier-asks-'what's-wrong-with-the-erie-canal-in-gaines'/msg2101/#msg2101
Even worse, the other founder of this group is demanding that
she, and her group, are allowed a "tour" of the unstable
embankment, maybe because they refuse to take the word of the
Canal Corporation that there are issues that need to be fixed.
Even though the Canal Corporation labeled it an active work
zone, and closed the Trail... due to the nature of the work
       being done there.
Again..this group, and its founders are accusing the Canal
Corporation of a "self-made" emergency repair with this Gaines
       Basin repair announcement.
Not sure why, it sounds like more of the groups continued denial
of the current hazardous state of the NYS Canal System, but who
am I to say, just an innocent bystander...who could be drowned
       by a canal breach

Canal Embankments Repair in Gaines Basin - Are these the before
       pictures?
   DIR By: Doug K
       Date: April 6, 2022, 3:46 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Just a hunch...and you can find these pictures on the NYS Canal
       Corporation's Website for Canal Integrity.
  HTML https://www.nyscanalintegrity.org/
This is the most likely site of this latest Erie Canal
Embankment Stabilization work, to reconstruct the outboard dam
slope, adding a filter blanket of materials, to slow the leakage
detected back in 2020. It was an issue back in 2020, and
       apparently has worsened throughout 2021.
       [attachimg=1]
Stay tuned for some new pictures of the cleared embankment
between Gaines Basin and Eagle Harbor Road.
And we may have some construction images soon, from the
embankment repair work that is being done in this canal section
to make it safe enough get water back in by April 22. We are
sure it will be on the list for monitoring thought the 2022
navigation season, all fresh dam repair work normally is.

We were wrong about the Royalton images, the embankment filter
blanket repair at Eagle Harbor / Gaines Basin is in the Town of
       Gaines, NY
That's the home of Childs and the Cobblestone Church &
Schoolhouse, and the Olde Village Inn, that is looking for a new
owner to open this landmark restaurant.
You can see current images from the TWO Canal work zones in this
       area here:
