       2 miles of Canal Embankment Dams = Trouble for Perinton

       There are approximately two miles of old embankment dam between
       31F in Fairport and Bushnell's Basin. the width of this is about
       60-90 feet.
       On these slopes plenty of huge CottonWood trees grow, many well
       over 100 feet tall, copiously watered from the seepage through
       the dams. We estimate over 2000 adult and aging trees each with
       an average weight of some 100 tons each. (A Cottonwood weighs
       about 50lbs per cubic foot.
       So, its pretty easy to work out the total weight of all these
       trees 2000 x 100 = 200,000 tons.
       Just sat there, waiting to fall.
       What if there was a domino effect? (There was one a couple of
       years ago, along Woodcrest Lane)
       Those tall trees, uprooted by the wind, could easily tear a hole
       in the embankment and cause a breach of the dam, so not only
       have you got millions and millions of gallons of water cascading
       down on villagers, huge trees will be entangled in the mess.
       The loss of life would be horrific.
       It would be reasonable to suggest that residents should not be
       so concerned about the water, but  the trees which would cause
       much more damage.
