In 1974 the Erie Canal breached at Bushnells Basin, causing a
major flood. It was the result of a problem with a culvert.
A few years ago, the NYPA shored up over 200 feet of canal
embankment at The Oxbow in Fairport. A Fiber Optic cable was
compromised in the process.
Our canal is about 200 years old. You can read about this and
many more problems at www.eriecanalfacts.wordpress.com
Here's the latest earthen embankment dam failure, which
reinforces the fact that these dams are DANGEROUS if not
maintained properly, AND these failures are a fairly regular
occurrence.
Is the Erie Canal next on the list? It is certainly the WORST
maintained we know about.
