Dams in NY State are a Danger, words from the NY State Canal
       Corporation, sadly still no action

The NYS Canal Corporation Senior Director for Public Engagement
reached out to the ECNA a few days ago and brought our attention
to a recent Times Union article on the state of Dam Safety in
New York State. It states pretty much along the same line of
what the Canal Corporation has been saying about their 125+
miles of earthen embankments.. overgrown, not properly
       maintained or inspected.
You can use the link provided to read about it, it's not a great
picture of community safety and has a few recent floods across
the state highlighted. Makes you wonder where the Erie Canal
Earthen Dams fall on the spectrum of safety.

Some of those past NY floods were the result of dams owned by
the New York Power Authority, and it appears that the article
also references that many dams fall under jurisdiction of the
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Those dams sometimes get a
"pass"... by NYS DEC folks, as they are basically owned and used
by "Power Companies" for the good of New York State.

It's a good article to read but unsure why the Canal Corporation
would point at such an obvious flaw in their Embankment
       Integrity Program.
After all, the NYS Canal Corporation and NYPA raised the RED
FLAG on Canal Safety with their Embankment Integrity Program in
       2018.
And they are still watching their own embankments decay & fail,
while they try to figure out how to stop "talking about Dam
Safety" and start actually REPAIRING their unsafe embankment
       problem.
It appears that ALL WORK on Canal Safety has been halted by a
social media Facebook group who decided that public safety
wasn't as important as "saving the environment", and
conveniently changed the subject... leaving the NYS Canal
       Corporation looking for answers.
Let's hope they figure out how to move forward with their Canal
Integrity work before we are reading a news article about an
Erie Canal Community being devastated by a "preventable flood"
