       Finally got around to working on the dock this past weekend. I
       was able to get the first of two 20' sections attached to the
       posts that I installed over the winter. The water was very high!
       When installing the dock frame the water level suddenly raised
       about 10 inches within 3 seconds then gradually dropped back
       down. I'm several canal miles from the nearest lock but I'm
       assuming a lock was opened and a large slug of water propagated
       down the canal. I was just surprised how quickly and how much
       the water level rose.

       That doesn't sound like a lock opening... those are slow and
       usually only add about 3-4 inches of water
       it does sound like run-off came in the Erie Canal from the huge
       rain storm that went through here.,.  I have some flood pictures
       i want to post of what happens living BELOW the Embankments when
       2" of rain falls, there are people that say the Erie Canal has
       no flooding issues..
       I beg to differ with that thinking and I have pictures to prove
       it. Maybe it's those Stop the Canal Project people, talking
       about the top the the trail... certainly don't think about those
       of us at the bottom

       The same scenario actually happened a few times when I was in
       the water a couple weeks ago. I had no idea what was happening
       so I scrambled out of the water :o.
