It's a Dam staring them in the face!

But I don't think they realize it.
One of Ms Eerie Agte's favorite photo op spots is down the
Oxbow, looking between the two islands towards the canal
embankment.
Firstly, I'd like to point out that several years ago, Ms Eerie
was complaining that the ECNA & Scouts had cut down all the
Ragweed, and tidied up the area. You couldn't see across here as
the vegetation was so tall. Now, she loves it! Ironic eh!
And she always manages to avoid taking a photo of the lovely
benches the Scouts put in at this very spot.
More importantly though, here is Lizzy's photo --

Notice the dip in the skyline of the trees.

Here it is from another angle. Note the trees are nowhere near
as tall in the center, and there is a reason for that. This is
exactly the spot where the embankment failed in 1872. It was
reported in a local newspaper and one can only imagine the
forces involved in this catastrophe.

In this photo, you can see the rubble flowing from the
embankment towards the left. This is exactly where the trees
haven't grown the same as the others. Perhaps the good soil was
washed out? Nothing much ever grew at the foot of the embankment
either.

Notice how steep the slope is. This flies against all the
engineering designs of today, and is the reason this dam is
unsafe.

Or maybe this Facebook group is just missing the important fact
that these trees are growing on Earthen Dams.
Might be because the group's new "wood whisperer" hasn't been
told that "truth" yet, directly from the source, those Erie
Canal Trees... perhaps they can do a Zoom call.

Of course the ECNA had to dig a little deeper into someone who
claims they have the answers to why Trees should be left on
Earthen Dams, while the State of New York says otherwise.
It appears that Ms. Ward, who is the new resident expert being
quoted by the Stop the Canal Clear-cut on Facebook, wasn't
selected for her education in Geology, Biology, Hydrology, or as
an expert on Embankment Dams.

She did have qualities desired by this Facebook group though,
specifically her Language Skills, take a look again.
Maybe she could relay messages between embankment trees and the
group's leadership?
But there is a noticeable absence of Bird, Squirrel and
Woodchuck languages, but we are sure that Ms. Ward could "pencil
that in" if it's needed.

a bit, and hopefully think about what is being shared by this FB
group

Do you know what I just said?
Well it's actually "Tree Lives Matter"!... in the native tongue
of the great Oak Tree
Would you like to hear it in Willow? Or make Black Walnut?
Perhaps your favorite tree to hate...the Cottonwood.?

The picture Mike linked to is of what is on the OTHER side of
those trees, or what should be there... a Cleared Earthen
Embankment Dam.
Take a look at the ORIGINAL version of the Oxbox Lake Dam in
Perinton

And here's a few more pictures from the Perinton Historical
groups.

Look at the amount of water being held back by that earthen
dam... and can you see the dam?
Those rail tracks, used to cart material when the Canal enlarged
to present size, have long been replaced by the Erie Canal Trail
and the bikers & hikers that frequent this 60' tall earthen dam
and don't realize what it really looks like under all those
trees covering it.
