Let us remember that the latter were in no way conceived by the
Sandinistas as competitive and pluralist elections that allowed
alternation in the can. They organized to counter the military
offensive of the Contras, supported by the United States ., and
to give the sensation to the European and Latin American
countries that, year after year, the Sandinistas resumed the
original promises of the revolution: pluralism and
non-alignment.
Let us also specify that, in 1984, under Phone Number List

from Washington, the bulk of the
opposition had made the most erroneous decision not to
participate in the elections and bet on the fact that the armed
opposition would end up winning one way or another. But let us
not forget how the fslnIt then multiplied the obstacles and
threats to some parties that had bravely presented themselves
against them. Let us think of the pressure exerted on the
voters, through the Sandinista Defense Committees – “the eyes
and ears of the revolution”, according to the slogan of the time
–, as well as the stuffing of ballot boxes in many places, far
from the observers international, with Sandinista votes, or even
in the mobilization of State resources for the Front's
propaganda operations.

In many respects, the strategy deployed by the FSLN beginning
with the 2008 municipal elections, and then in all the elections
that followed, was similar. An image of pluralist elections was
offered, while alternation was considered unacceptable by Ortega
and his close circle. In this way, the Sandinistas, from the CSE
magistrates to the activists who controlled the polling
stations, competed in ingenuity to organize the fraud. Little by
little, parties outside Sandinismo were prohibited from
presenting candidates.
