I have been working through my own emotional journey for a long
time and as a result have some reflections on the
characteristics I exhibit when acting as an "Emotional
Anorectic". Feel free to add yours to this topic.

- suppress desires and needs because I am traumatized by them
[li]I hate the feeling of being disappointed so much that I
would rather not want anything. No wants equals no
disappointment in my unhealthy thinking. The truth is that I do
have wants, needs, desires but I have to pretend that I don't to
satisfy this life philosophy which puts me in heavy cognitive
dissonance. It wants on my body and soul to live that way and
eventually I am overcome by some compulsory activity.
[/li]
- classify all emotions as negative--even those that others
might label ‘positive’
- As a coping habit I turn off all emotions. Consequently, I
rarely experience joy or happiness
- Though I may share deep, intimate, personal details with
‘friends’ I do not allow myself to emotionally attach to them.
- I have rare periods of Emotional Bulimia-- where I will lose
myself in a relationship but purge everything from that
relationship once ended.
- I use coping mechanisms, distractions, and addictions to
manage the inevitable surface of emotions
- I spend years or decades being ‘single’ to avoid the emotions
that are inherent in a significant relationship.
[li]Though I may flirt with a potential romantic partner I will
not follow through
I sabotage relationships when it looks like the other person
might be romantically interested or at least make it clear that
we are ‘just friends’
