Is there a need for Emotional Anorectics Anonymous?

If you are reading this and you don't know what emotional
anorexia is you may want to start with a different post and then
come back to this one.
When searching for emotional anorexia material online I find
results that fall into these categories
- S.L.A.A. (Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous)
- Love Addict/Avoidant based on work of Pia Melody
- Intimacy Anorexia based on the work of Dr. Douglas Weiss
S.L.A.A. is where I first encountered this concept and I am very
thankful to that program. That group generally dedicates 1
meeting each month to anorectic topics. Even so, I found myself
the token anorectic at meetings. It makes sense that anorectics
would shy away from meetings. A compulsion to avoid emotions
pushes us away from strong emotional settings. The meetings I
attended were often heavy with pain, struggle, tears, and
authenticity.
The bigger point I would like to make is that the above
programs/materials focus on being in one or more sexual or
romantic relationships. Sex may not be the coping mechanism
used by the emotional anorectic who is likely to avoid
significant relationships. An individual may be averse to sex
and not know it or may just be lacking in experience as a result
of the avoidance of strong emotional situations inherent in a
romantic relationship. In short, as a chronic 'single' much of
the material did not fit my situation. S.L.A.A. does include
materials on sexual, social, and emotional anorexia but there is
not much available and it is closely tied to sex and love--or
the lack of them--which are only a small subset of human
emotions.
As with many 12 step groups there are behaviors a person might
exhibit that would fit in various programs. It is up to the
individual and qualified health professionals to decide if a
program centered around "emotional anorexia" might be
beneficial. These sites are my attempts to give back to the 12
step communities that I have benefited from and to help those
who are trapped in the addiction of avoiding emotions. It is my
hope that we find support in each other's experiences and words.
After all, it is only our experience that we are uniquely
qualified to share with each other.
