       Well I wouldn't have wanted to have gone through what my
       parents, grandparents and their relatives and friends went
       through - from the rise of Hitler and National Socialism through
       to the Final Solution and Holocaust. They lived in daily fear of
       being shipped away in cattle trucks and gassed - hardly a time
       of nostalgia.

       My son is having to research war records of his great
       grandparents as part of a lockdown VE project.
       My Dad's father's records were lost in a fire. He was royal
       engineers and out in Italy. My mother's father is well
       documented. Battle of Crete with the Royal Marines when he was
       41 years of age. Retreat across the White Mountains as German
       stukas dive bombed and then ferried off the beach on the more
       remote southern side of the island to Egypt.
