Back to BASICs

Many us who are a little older first started our computing on
the micro machines of 1980's
These were usually based around a 6502 processor, Atari, BBC,
Commodore and Spectrum were the favourites tho' there were
plenty of other makes trying to capture a share of the market.
My machine was an Atari 800XL, happens I've still got it up in
the loft and every now and then dig it out for a play when the
mood takes me.
One of the attractions of these early machines was that most of
them came with the BASIC programming language loaded in as
standard.
The beauty was that someone with almost no knowledge, a
complete beginner, could soon be tapping in a few lines of code
and be given the impression of taking control of a computer
which at the time seemed pretty marvellous considering up
untill then computing machines had been in the realms of
scientific instuments.
There are of course several BASICs that will run on a PC but
recently I have been taking a look at Microsoft Small Basic .
Now, it's probably going to be of no interest whatsoever to
anyone already proficient in any of the 'real' programming
languages but if all your after is something with which to mess
about on your computer and doesn't take too much head-scratching
to learn then this may be for you.
