DeAndre's Vocal Range

So I tried to chart it, and I came up with B2 to C6 which is
ridiculous. (Same as Beyonce's) But I feel like it's actually
probably bigger than that. Anyone know what it is?

sorry, i don't have the skills or the equipment to gauge it in
technical terms, i just know what i like and i know that
deandre's full range is one of the things i love about him, love
his mellow low tones, his falsetto, his yummy mid-range, he's
got it all and it doesn't really matter to me how many octaves
he can span, i just know it's candy for my ears :D

and I realized something else, there's something about the way
he goes in and out of his different ranges. Like the way he did
in womans work. I think that's the reason he made me love a
song I really didn't like. oh did I say that before? ???

I don't know the technical stuff either, lol. But for me Dre's
range = Prince-like.  ;D

Yea, this kid is just so amazing vocally that it's kind of fun
to look at all the technical stuff.

I tweeted MasterClass Lady and Dre asking if they know his vocal
range... noted your guess in the tweet. ;) Haven't heard back,
but will let you know if I do!

DeAndre's Vocal Range revisited
By: mercfan3 Date: June 24, 2012, 11:34 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
[Another update..keeping up with the thread. Thanks so much
DreDreamer10!!] So, I asked about this awhile ago, and come to
find out, I actually had a tool on my computer that could pick
up notes and tell me the pitches. So, I figured it out for
myself, and I thought some might like to know. :P
I want to start off by saying, I thought Dre's vocal range was
likely huge. I was surprised by just how huge it is - and it
might actually be larger.
Let me put it this way, of the idol contestants I did (and I'll
chart those) Dre had the largest range. I thought he might be
second to Kelly Clarkson, but he beat her.
With the low notes I actually got lucky. The lowest note that
was picking up was a C#3, but I knew he was singing lower than
that in his silly little duet thing with Molia B. (He got all
excited when he hit the low note.) I got lucky, as Usher did,
what sounded to me, as the exact same run that Dre had done. So
I gave him that note as his low note. It might actually be
lower, but I thought it sounded nearly identical, to the point
where I couldn't tell which one was which in an audio file.
A lot of people don't include falsetto in their range
calculation. But I go by the definition of "if the singer uses
it normally, then it's part of their range." And obviously, Dre
uses his falsetto. So long as they can sing straight through
those notes (IE go up and down the scale) it's fair game, I
think.
So, here's a bit of comparison's.
If you have 2 and a half octaves, you are considered to have
pretty great range. The top 8 idol contestants ranges were:
Phillip Phillips: G3 –E5 (1 octave 5 notes)
Colton Dixon: C3 – A#4 (1 octave 5 notes and a semi note)
Elise Testone: G3- C#6 (2 octaves 3 notes and a semi note)
Skylar Laine: D3 –A5 (2 octaves 4 notes)
Jessica Sanchez: C3 – C#6 (3 octaves and a semi note) *Jessica's
range was very interesting*
Joshua Ledet: F3 –C#6 (2 octaves 4 notes and a semi note)
Hollie Cavanah: G3-C#6 (2 octaves 3 notes and a semi note)
Pia Toscano: E3-B5 (2 octaves 4 notes)
As you can see, people who most would say have great range
(Joshua, Hollie, Skylar, Elise) where all in the 2 octave range
place. Jessica Sanchez is considered to have exception range,
and she clocks in second in this idol group with 3 octaves and a
semi note.
DeAndre's: D2 –B5 (3 octaves and 5 notes.)
Absolutely Ridiculous.
so okay, he kicked season 11's butt when it comes to range.
Let's take a look at some of the biggest contestants idol has
ever had.
Carrie Underwood: Eb3 – F#5 (2 octaves and 2 notes) *I'll be
honest, I actually think this is wrong, but it keeps showing up
for her vocal range. Carrie must not use her head voice
much/well.*
Haley Reinhart: G#3 – F6 (2 octaves 6 notes and a semi note)
Kelly Clarkson: Eb3- F#6 (3 octaves and 2 notes)
Siobhan Magnus: E3- B5 (2 octaves 4 notes)
Adam Lambert: G2-B5 (3 octaves 2 notes)
Daughtry: F#2 – B5 (3 octaves 2 notes and a semi note)
Diana Degarmo: E3- E5 (2 octaves) *once again, seems a little
low, but like Carrie she belts*
Fantasia Barrino: C3 – G#5 (2 octaves and 4 notes and a semi
note)
Jennifer Hudson: C3 – C#6 (3 octaves and a semi note) *The first
thing that made Jessica's range "interesting." Exactly the same
range as the Diva who had a way too early exit, like Jessica
might have if it wasn't for the save. But it gets more
interesting.*
James Durbin: C3 – A#5 (2 octaves 5 notes and a semi - note)
As you can see, Dre kicks their butts too. Daughtry, Kelly, and
Adam come in second with 3 octaves and 2 notes. I would imagine,
given the people I looked up (Unless anyone can find anyone with
a bigger range than Kelly or Adam) That DeAndre likely has the
largest range of any contestant ever on idol.
So then I looked up some Diva's. I have a tendency, to prefer
the contestant every year that has the largest range. I don't
automatically look for it, it's subconscious. So it didn't shock
me that it was Dre this season..and then when he exited, I ended
up preferring Jessica. I was brought up on Diva's. Mariah Carey
and Whitney Houston were what brought me to love music. So it's
not really that surprising that I love singers with a huge
range. (And Love falsetto's on men. When I was younger I thought
that was Justin Timberlake's only redeeming quality.) And thus,
I always loved the Divas...so..here's a comparison of Dre's
range to some of the biggest divas.
Adele: C3 – D6 (3 octaves and a note)
Gaga: D3 – B5 (2 octaves and 5 notes)
Whitney Houston: C3 – C#6 (3 octaves) *Interesting bit number 2.
No wonder people thought they heard Whitney when Jessica
sings...*
Mariah Carey: G#2 – G#7 (5 octaves)
Christina Aguilera: C3- A6 (3 octaves 5 notes)
Once again, Dre beats all of them except Mariah and Christina
(tied..for now.. :P).
And finally, I compared him to singers like him. Seeing other
falsetto singers in comparison...
Usher: F2-B5 (3 octaves 3 notes)
Justin Timberlake: F2- G5 (3 octaves 1 note)
Michael Jackson: F2-C6 (3 octaves 4 notes)
Prince: E2 – C#7 (4 octaves 5 notes and a semi note)
Once again, only losing to Prince and Michael Jackson (possibly)
I am truly amazed at this. Like I said, I'm hoping by the end of
the week to have one of those "range" videos, and to put it up
on youtube just to prove it, because part of me still doesn't
believe it. :D (Even though I have no reason to doubt my
computer program, which was right on everyone else.)
There's obviously other "things" to singing. But this aspect,
when he's in the rare company of Mariah and Prince, shows you
just how talented he is. (And then let's add in the gorgeous
tone and control...)

I know..I'm still stunned.
When I do the video, we'll know for sure. Although I can say
with pretty much certainty that he's got a bigger vocal range
than Kelly Clarkson, and it's definitely way over 3. I believe
I'm right, but I won't be certain until I compare note by note.
(Once again, a little unsure with the computer program.)

4 octaves?! WHOA! :o that is a crazy range for a guy, or for
anyone for that matter. i love singers with big voices, but for
me it's also about your vocal tone and how you use the range you
have. lucky for Dre, i love all of those things about him.
on Idol i don't necessarily love the big voices most. i just
love the most soulful ones. and i love a voice that has just the
right amount of rasp/grit but can go silky, gentle, and smooth
on cue. my fave artists lately all have those qualities. but Dre
does it in this way that's just so amazing to me, idek ;D
i knew he had a big range, but wow, rivaling Prince? that's
impressive. and guys, he's only 17! imagine a few years from now
when his voice is only bound to get richer and fuller. that's
ridiculous to think about!
your computer program seems pretty accurate. those vocal ranges
are the ones i typically see online for those big-voiced
singers.
so will your video show him singing note by note? good luck on
this project. ;D i was already impressed by DeAndre's voice
without fully grasping the technical aspect, but doing this
would definitely blow me away.
