Goalkeepers and Pairings
By: Wiseowl65 Date: July 23, 2013, 3:08 pm

Hi Guys
Lets talk goalkeepers and there possible pairings last year i
went with Jaaskelainen and Begovic at a combined price of i
think 9m correct me if i am wrong a good solid pairing that
served me well all season at a very good price, to have that
pair this season will set you back 11m way to expensive for
goalkeepers imo so what is your thoughts on combined price, i
personally think 9.5 is a good price per pairing giving a 5m and
4.5m for playing keepers i have looked at the 4m choices but i
cannot see any starters so for me not an option unless you want
to go for say a 4m and 5.5m or 6m pairing with a non starter not
a bad idea if you plan to start one keeper all season? Out of
the goalkeepers i am currently looking at a few stand out above
others for price and first team selection those being Boruc 4.5m
and Ruddy 5m but neither of them rotate with each other, others
are Vorm 5m and Foster 5m but the one that interests me most is
Mignolet should have Liverpool spot nailed down pending Reina's
move away to Napoli but at 5.5m there is a cheaper way into the
Liverpool defence in Kolo Toure at 5m so is he that much of a
good shout lets say pairing him with a 4m keeper and playing
Mignolet every game week home and away will keep you in the 9.5m
budget. Goalkeepers that rotate well this season are
West
Brom - Aston Villa
Newcastle - Sunderland
West
Ham - Southampton
Norwich
- Stoke City
Crystal
Palace - Hull City
So Whats peoples thoughts and ideas as i am really struggling to
put together a cheap pairing within budget that rotates well
indeed can it be achieved. Please feel free to discuss.

I am having a similar problem with gks. I have mingolet at the
moment with davis ( just changed after I read your post ). I
think jasaskelainen might be a fine choice instead of mingolet,
it does feel like 9.5 is the right number to spend, I cant see
much past having davis as your sub and the main is just personal
preference, there doesn't seem to be a huge amount in it though
you could well argue that jaaskelainen has a slightly better
fixture list to start with that might actually be a bonus with a
slightly worse defence as he could benefit from more bonus
points given the new system ( though how much that will affect
bonuses on a per game basis is unclear ).

I'm not a big lover of keepers. I am often tempted by the
premium goalies but when I'm trying to raise that extra million
they are the first to be cut.
When I choose my pair I have one cryteria that I stick to which
is they must both be first choice. It sounds simple but I don't
want to have to waste a future tranfer. Having 2 playing keepers
gives me an element of choice (even if I often get it wrong) and
it covers me for absences ect. An exception was last year when I
had Rudd from Norwich because Ruddy had a long term injury.
I am drawn to the Jaaskelainen and Boruc combo, but at 10 mill
for the pair I feel its expensive.
As I've said I want two playing keepers and 10 mill is too much
that leaves me with either a 5 + 4.5 or 2x 4.5's.
At 5 mill there are some nice options such as Ruddy (Nor), Vorm
(Swa) and Foster (WBA).
Swansea have a tough start playing Man U, Spurs, Liverpool and
Arsenal in their first 6 games. I can see Vorm's price dropping.
Last year Vorm and Ruddy were injured. Last season Swansea
conceded 51 goals, West Brom 57 and Norwich 58.
At 4.5 mill we get a choice from any of the newly promoted
teams. This feels like a gamble on either one. Boruc at
Southampton is tempting, but with Shaw and Clyne great budget
defenders do you want to double up on a Southampton defence?
Szczesny (5.5) at Arsenal deserves a mention. Arsenal conceded
just 37 goals last season and had the second tightest defence in
the league. He does feel like the best value keeper in the game
this season. It may be worth moving some money out of defence to
bring Szczesny in?

totally agree with all of this, I did want to say there was some
reason I didn't pick szczesney but I cannot think what it was
now....possibly its just effort typing his name a lot into
potential team listings....apart from that he looks great and I
am strongly considering him!
I suspect im just going to choose a 5.5 keeper to go with
davis...

If I can somehow find .5m to get Jusi and Boruc in I do feel
that this is the best pairing but its 10m .5m above what I like
to spend, they both rotate well have good early fixtures i
believe both teams will keep a good few clean sheets this year
especially Southampton they both play the 1 striker up top in a
4231 which should give them a good solid midfield screen in
front of their defence in Wanyama and Schniederlin. I prefer
Clyne over Shaw as Shaw picked up a few niggling injuries last
season and may be prone to the odd rest due to his young age and
they have Danny Foxx who could step in and do a job also I would
have Clyne and Boruc in the same defensive unit it worked last
year for me with Begovic and Shawcross certainly for the early
season home games. Thoughts.

Im not averse to spending that .5 million if its truly worth it,
do you have it spare in your squad though? I am really not good
with the rotating GK thing, last season I basically used one
goalie and just had the cheapest starter I could as backup, I
was never sure what was wrong with this.

There is no rights and wrongs lots of people use just one keeper
all season paired with a non starter on their bench I am leaning
towards the West Ham- Southampton combo or Mignolet and a other
which one I don't yet know there is a long way to go yet so lets
just tinker away and get the combo right :)

for most of my squads I have mingolet and davis, it seems pretty
good but mingolet could be any one of several 5.5m keepers, its
pretty hard to distinguish between them and I suspect ill spend
30 mins at some point going through the first 10 weeks of
fixtures to see who has the better run :)

Isn't Davis no.2 at Southampton? If he is this feels like a
gamble that will come and bite you at some stage.

urg you could be right, I haven't done as much research as I
should on gks, I just saw he was the 4m gk with the most points.
I do agree you need 2 starters to be on the safe side more often
than not even if they are bad.
