Benteke

Just been thinking about bringing Benteke into my squad for week
1 so I decided to do a little research and I was surprised how
good he looks.
HTML http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=56519&season_id=142
Last season he scored 3 against Liverpool across 2 games and 1
against Chelsea. Match reports show that the Chelsea defence
could not handle Benteke and had he not been sent off then Villa
would probably have gone on to win the game.
Villa had lost 8-0 to Chelsea earlier in the season so read into
figures whatever you will. Villa had a new manager at the start
of last season and struggled over the first 4/5 months. Their
record in the second half of the season was pretty decent. In
their last 19 games they scored in every game bar 3 (vs
Southampton, Man U and Man C). Considering they played every
team in the league during this period it's tough to say that
they might not score in either game.
To put it into perspective, during the second half of last
season here are the number of games that teams failed to score
in:
Villa - 3
Liverpool - 4
Man U - 1
Chelsea - 1
Southampton - 5
Everton - 6
Arsenal - 2
Spurs - 2
Swansea - 9
Fulham - 7
Just from looking at these stats and comparing Villa to teams
that finished in the top half of the Premiership last season,
it's tough to argue that Villa won't score in either of their 2
games. Last season Villa scored 47 goals of which Benteke scored
19 of them and assisted in 4 more. That puts him as being
directly involved in 49% of their goals.
I know it's a new season but Benteke really does look a decent
shout for a starting position. I'm not saying he's captain
material, but ignore him at your peril. I've not seen many
people consider him so he could be a great differential.

The timing of your post after I just advised the exact opposite
is amusing :p
I still maintain that hes not worth 9m, lets say he does score
in one of the games, that's 6 points which is ok but you have to
look at the fact hes SO unlikely to get more than that. Hes
never going to get 2 goals or a goal and an assist so you are
capping your points with that 9m investment. Take any other
striker for 7+m that week, with pretty much all of them ( cept
Swansea maybe ) you can see them getting 2 goals and in pretty
much every case they are at least a million cheaper. I think its
actually a close call whether benteke is more likely to score
once in 180 mins vs ars and che than any other 7.5 m striker
against their fixtures in gw1. I can see mourinho totally
shutting him down and although wegner might not do as good a job
its still not the worst defence ever and would you really invest
9 m in a striker for 1 game vs arsenal?
I think if he were 8 m I'd go for it but I think that extra
million really puts me off.

Nice research there Paul, I'm glad you've got the stats to back
up what my instincts were telling me. If anything I'm surprised
that Benteke was "only" involved in 49% of Villa's goals last
season. Watching them it seemed like he had a hand in everything
good they did up front. I'd been eyeing him for team before the
DGW was announced and that just made it certain.
Just to correct you on one thing farside, if he does score in
one of the two games then that's an 8pt haul as he's a certainty
to play both matches and so is working from a base 4pts. Not
that I imagine that will persuade you over to this side of the
argument, but I thought I'd mention it anyway :P

hehe, yeah I realise he would get 8 over the two games but I
realise I didn't really word my argument very well. You guys
have made me think about it more but I just am really struggling
to justify 9m on the guy even with two bites of the cherry. If
he were against teams with any sort of bad defence id have him
straight away I think.

Great post, Josephus. I also think he is too expensive, but in
my oppinion his price was added before he signed new contract
with Villa - if he moved to any of the top teams, he would be
steal for less. He is definitely penciled in my team for GW1,
but I afraid of one other thing: his temper when defenders
completely block him out, in that case he is a card magnet...

Last season he picked up 9 yellows of which 2 were in the
Chelsea game where he was sent off.
Interestingly, in the eight games where he picked up a yellow he
had scored a total of 7 goals (5 out of 8) and Villa won 4 of
these games, drew 1 and lost 3.
Based on last year, I can't see any evidence to cause concern
that Benteke is more likely to be yellow carded in week 1 more
than any other week (playing 2 games aside).

A preseason hatrick for Benteke.
From Fantasy Football Scout,
"Crewe 1 Aston Villa 5
Villa’s first pre-season win coincided with Christian Benteke’s
first start of the summer as Paul Lambert’s side racked up the
goals last night. With Gabby Agbonlahor returning from injury,
the Villa boss was able to name his first-choice front three and
watched on as Benteke rattled in a hat-trick, while Andreas
Weimann also impressed with a goal and assist. Lambert named a
strong starting line-up, with Antonio Luna at left-back and
fellow new boy Leandro Bacuna handed a spot in the midfield
three – the latter was the only player to last the distance as
Lambert made 10 changes on the hour mark and vindicated his
manager’s decision by firing home the fifth to cement a strong
display.
With a double Gameweek 1 on the horizon, albeit away to Arsenal
and Chelsea, Villa’s attacking assets are expected to pick up in
investment as a result of the remaining uncertainty over the
Blues’ likely frontline starters – post-match, Lambert was
clearly delighted with how his side performed:
“It was good to have Gabby and Andi back, Christian played an
hour too. It was Helenius’ first 30 minutes too since Germany.
We have Tonev, Okore and Bennett to come back too. It was very
pleasing. The performance was very good. We were disappointed to
concede a goal. But the way we played, the application, the
performance levels, it was very, very good. There were a lot of
pluses. It was potentially a tricky game, Crewe are a good side.
I thought we started very well and performed very well. Things
are going quite good at the minute. We are getting there.
There’s still a long way to go though. There’s still a lot of
work to do. But you can see when we’re on top of our game, we’re
a good side.”"

I had him already in my starting line up for GW1 so after
reading this thread and the stats from Josephus he is definitely
in my front 3 for the DGW he is hard to ignore given the
guaranteed game time he will get he carries Villa's biggest goal
scoring threat and he is on penalty duty although 9m the 2
matches he will play make him a no brainer for me.
