       Xavier's Flu

Kimbra swiped a shaking hand across her forehead and tried again
to focus on the order in front of her. Sandwich and…sandwich
and…the paper fluttered from her clumsy fingers and she swore
softly, drawing a glare from the manager in the kitchen. The
small pub was burning up despite the December chill and her hand
came away slick with sweat from her forehead but she had to keep
going. If the boss man had any inclination she was sick she'd be
fired in a heartbeat. Or worse…turned in. So far the concealer
and nail polish was doing the trick but every time she took a
step the floor swayed dizzyingly beneath her and her stomach
       lurched.
"Turkey sandwich and Half Moon?" She rasped and slid the order
out onto the table for a scowling patron. No tip from this one
then. At least she'd been able to make it three feet from the
kitchen to the bar without toppling over or spilling her guts
which were constantly threatening to revolt. One small triumph
for the minimum wage lackey. Now if she could only make it
through the next 7 hours of the day.

Randy crept silently, hiding behind the cold cement barrier.
Somewhere on the other side lay his adversary. Tightening his
grip on his gun, Randy tightened his muscles, then quickly swept
       past the barrier.
“Put your hands in the air!” Randy shouted as he pointed the
handgun at empty space. Confused, Randy looked around without
taking his finger off the trigger. There did not appear to be
any way for his target to escape in this alley. Without changing
expression, Randy focused his hearing and filtered out the rest
of the city. He could hear heavy breathing somewhere, and it was
       moving.
Randy slowly walked into the alley and continued to search, but
could see nothing but dumpsters and week old newspapers blowing
in the wind. The streetlamp behind him cast his shadow down the
alley alongside another tall figure’s shadow. Randy did not
think, he just turned and shot. Blood painted a dumpster with an
abstract pattern as shuffling could be heard from an invisible
source. Slowly, coming into vision, a figure began to appear,
first as a blur, then into clean focus as he fell to the ground,
still leaking blood. After a minute, the person stopped moving.
Randy checked for a pulse, then pulled out a cellphone.
“It’s Randy. The fugitive has been neutralized with extreme
       prejudice.”

"Lexi," the voice broke her from her reverie. "Earth to Lexi."
       "Sorry, I, uh... sorry."
"Late night? You seem really out of it."
       "Yeah, I was... out."
       "All night?"
"Yup," she looked back at her computer screen, "all night."
"Liar. I asked you out to join the rest of us from the office
for drinks. You said you were going to bed early." Lexi
pretended to ignore the accusation. Her co-worker Melanie took a
seat in the chair across from her in the cubicle and appeared
concerned. "You haven't been sleeping lately, have you." It was
clear that she hadn't. Lexi continued to ignore her and so she
attempted a more playful approach. "You don't play fair, you
know. You get less beauty sleep than half of the women in this
office and still look more professional than any of us. Got a
full 7 hours last night and I still can't look that good, ya
bitch." They smiled at one another.
       "I think it's just this damn Xavier's flu thing. I don't know
what angle to approach it from."
"Bullshit, you've got this article in the bag." Lexi tried to
force a smile and take the compliment but it did very little to
make her feel any better. "Do you... know anyone... who's been
       infected?"
"I don't know." It was the first honest thing Lexi had said to
her all day. After a short period of silence, Melanie stood to
her feet and reached out a hand to her.
"Okay, come on. We're going to lunch."

If yesterday had been hell today was...god she couldn't even
come up with a decent metaphor for what today was. She'd barely
made it to work on time and stumbled through the past two hours
of her shift but had already messed up two orders, dropped three
glasses, and had to step out four times to hurl into the back
alley before taking another table. Groggy and shaking she made
her way back out, pausing to catch her breath in the doorway
separating the lunchtime crowd from the kitchen. The bar was
sweltering. Tying her hair in a clumsy ponytail she tried to
pull herself together again and slowly made her way to the
newest customer though she had to clear her throat twice before
she was able to speak in a hoarse whisper. "Hi, I'm Kimbra. Can
I take your order?" Resist the urge to brace against the
table...resist the urge...The mental mantra kept up as she felt
her stomach lurch again and a bead of sweat trickle down the
       back of her shirt.

"I'll take a bowl of today's soup and some breadsticks. I'll
take those to go, I didn't realize the time." Randy looked at
his watch, disturbed at how he let himself lose track of what
time it was. Normally his stop at this restaurant was longer and
more leisurely, but his walk took longer than normal. Quickly he
looked at his mail on his phone, not noticing the waitress
nearly falling as she walked towards the kitchen. Maybe it was
the meeting with the chief of his sector of the city that threw
him off. Anticipating what he was being called in for definitely
threw a curve ball at Randy. Were they concerned with the number
of neutralizations he had done this week? Damn their standards
and rules; they didn't know what the field was like.
"Here's your... order... sir..." the waitress was back with
       Randy's food in a bag.
"Thanks, here." Randy threw down three fives and two ones on the
table. More than enough for the meal and tip. He stood up and
walked out the door. He'd eat this on the bus and be ready to
meet with the chief by the time he got to his stop. What could
       he want?

She'd almost made it an entire shift. Almost.
Her last customer barely made it out the door with a bowl of
soup and breadsticks to go when the floor suddenly lurched out
from under her feet and she fell heavily to her knees,
scattering silverware and broken ceramic across the wooden floor
with a deafening crash. As patrons scattered away from her like
ripples she tried desperately to get herself back under control
but the fever had decided she'd been the boss for too long and
finally it'd taken root for good. The room was suddenly
sweltering despite the shivers that shook her frame
uncontrollably and her head ached as if in a vice. This was
it...the third day test everyone dreaded.
"Everyone out! Get away from the girl!" Somewhere in the
distance the manager shooed customers out the front and back
doors away from her as she curled up in the floor with a groan,
eyes shut tight and hands threaded through her hair in an effort
to block out the migraine. She needed to go home. If someone
could just carry her home she could sleep this off.
