       Chapter 2
I leapt up from my position, pulling out a set of brass knuckles
from my pocket, and curled it around my right fist. The big guy
was getting closer, moving through the bushes as if they weren’t
there. Finally, I got a real good look at what I was
fighting….not good. The mane of a beast was sticking out from a
ripped shirt underneath the leather, and strong neck muscles
pushed at the collar of the jacket, ending in a head that, well,
was something out of a greek myth – large, ruddy eyes stared out
from under a cliff of bone, sloping to make room for a boar’s
snout that stuck at a weird angle up in the air…the creature’s
lower lip stuck out and flopped on the chin, parting to reveal
measly yellow teeth crowded out by two large tusks that had
metal bands hammered into them. Good lord, why me? The hands
were closer together, clawed and not looking very functional but
still dangerous. The thing, which stood nearly a foot over me,
stepped up onto the bank, and eyed me warily. I was looking
chiefly at the fact that the thing actually had hoofs instead of
feet, stuck into his boots for concealment. And there’s two of
       these things?
All right, I can’t go punch for punch with you, Tusk-boy. One of
those claws could tear something off me I’d like to keep. So
       let’s do something else.
“Knockout!!” I cried as I swung my right arm around in a
backfist towards Tuskboy, drawing on his kinetic powers and
triggering the amplifying quality of the brass knuckles.
A buffet of force smashed the beastman back into the brush,
taking him out of his boots and onto his arse. The other
beastman crouched down, and I heard a low, instinctively
frightening growl issue from its throat. Visions of poor, dumb
apes being run down and devoured by the big cats of prehistory
ran through my mind, making me take a step back as I considered
my next move. Darwin didn’t know about magic, I considered, not
a damned thing. At the same time, my rational brain did some
ugly math that told me that two large beastmen would equal my
end in a relatively short span of time. I need to slow them
down, stop them cold. Wouldn’t hurt to have some help either,
but I think I’m going to have to hang tough here…
The Catman leapt up and nearly through the hedge, landing with
some grace on top of the hedges. Its body was covered in short,
black fur…the face distinctly leonine with eyes that shone green
and ghastly in the gloom of the wintry park. I couldn’t see a
tail, but the claws on the fur-lined hands caught my attention.
Those eyes were fixed on me now, even as the beast swayed
slightly on the hedge. I matched its gaze, waiting for the
moment of its leap…my right fist curled around the knuckles, my
boots braced in the snow, and the words of force on my lips.
The stone on my chest hummed.
The Catman’s ears perked up, and its head tilted slightly to the
       right.
“I think it’s for me,” I said, “excuse please.”
I bolted into a run down the hedgerow as the Catman leapt after
me. My feet did not love this idea; running in boots really
sucked. I put my hand into my shirt and grabbed the stone.
       “Say again?”
       We’re here! Where are you?
“Running along the hedge! What took you guys? I’ve got one on my
side chasing me down, and I’ve lost the other! Watch for him!”
       Heading towards you…get ready.
“Wunderbar! My ass is in the wind! I repeat, my ass is in the
       wind!”
I could hear the cat gaining on him…maybe five feet back…I’m
screwed. Fight or flight, fight or flight. Ok, fight. I turned
and readied a punch. However, the beast left the ground in a
fantastic micro leap, and…booted me in the head. I saw stars,
staggered, and went down on my ass. My head seemed to land
gently in a plop on the snow, sending up a puff of flakes that
drifted down. The beast landed somewhere behind me. I struggled
to get up, but failed miserably as my inner ear disagreed with
where I was going and failed to balance. Suddenly, a pair of
clawed hands seized my shoulders, and pulled me around to face a
snarling maw full of sharp teeth. Those green eyes looked into
mine, although I was actually seeing about ten different pairs
of eyes…the end remains the same. Fuck you, Darwin…
