Chapter 8
I stood at the table, looking down at the potion grimly. The
substance swirled a little, and some bubbles left over from the
making drifted up to lightly pop at the surface. I looked at
the formula as it was laid out in the book, and shook my head.
I had brewed potions before, with some success. In my opinion,
they never work quite as expected, but that had a lot to do with
the maker. On a wing and a prayer, or perhaps a hoof, I
reflected.
“You're sure about this stuff?” I asked Gage, who was sitting on
the table and kicking her feet.
“I'm sure, Max. I know I said I had some wine, but I know what
I'm doing when it comes to potions.”
I turned away from the table, rubbing my chin where stubble had
crept up during the day.
“It's an awfully risky thing to pull off, and we really don't
know much about the opposition,” I commented.
“I get that, but we'll learn a lot more this way, and the
opposition will be revealed too.”
“There's no guarantee, Gage; none at all. However, we don't
really have much else to go on.”
“So you'll suggest it to Brom?”she asked, beaming like a kid
asking to borrow the keys for the car.
“I'll bring it to him in the morning, sure,” I agreed.
The notion was not sitting well with me; Brom would see the
flaws in our little plan. Our only hope was that he had come to
the same conclusion that we had, and gave us the green light.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure,” she replied, jumping down from the table.
“There's only two potions here. What about Dante? Where does
he fit in?”
“That's two questions.”
“Don't get all technical on me,” I said, “I just need to know
why.”
Gage shrugged and crossed her arms, and a slight flush rose in
her cheeks.
“Promise you won't tell Brom?”
“Tell him what?”
“Well, I hate to say anything Max, but something happened
tonight that I've been mulling over – I don't know what to
think. You know how everything supernatural, with some
exceptions, gives off a tingle of power, like a disturbance when
their active?”
“Yeah,” I replied, “so?”
“Dante gives off the same vibe.”
My eyebrows raised up a bit. I'd never felt that, but I was
nowhere near as sensitive as she was.
“That's news to me, Gage, but okay. What's your point?”
“Tonight, for a good portion of our outing in the park, he went
off the radar completely. He was there, and then I couldn't
feel anything.”
“When?”
“Until I caught up with you two, I didn't feel his presence at
all. I was trying to find him when you sent out your S.O.S.”
Damn, that was odd. As this news came together with my earlier
misgivings, a real doubt started to build in my head. What was
going on?
“So you're trying to bench him during the operation? Don't you
think he'll suspect something?”
“Maybe, but I've got a bad feeling about this, and I believe
with good reason.”
“Let me think it over, and we'll talk again in the morning,
okay?”
Gage didn't look happy about it, but she shrugged and nodded.
“Okay,” she said, “meet me here at eight?”
“Eight it is,” I said, picking up my bag, “good night, Gage.”
“'Night,” she replied, yawning and stretching. I couldn't help
but notice what that did to her body, even with the robes.
Maybe I set my shower to the wrong temperature when I got back
tonight...
