Misanthropy

Misanthropy has had a lot of different functional definitions
throughout the ages.
Plato defined misanthropy as the feeling that was created when
trust in someone is revealed as misplaced. The amount of
misanthropy here increases relative to the amount of trust
placed and the duration the trust was placed. This is not what
we mean by misanthropy anymore. We call this misplaced trust
naive optimism, for now.
Kant broke down misanthropy into two categories: anthropophobia
and enmity. Anthropophobia is intense social anxiety and fear of
social situations. Enmity is an intense disgust or hatred toward
society. Both of these similarly define a misanthrope as one who
wishes to avoid social situations and society in general.
That seems agreeable but Schopenhauer would challenge you to
think a step further. In a society of misanthropes, or at least
with enough people who believe in misanthropic adages, there is
a paradoxical sense of society among those who dislike society.
These sorts of people may (but not necessarily) believe things
like human existence being an error, suicide being a rational
choice, or that we are all suffering through existence together.
In any case, misanthropy - though not necessarily harmful by
itself - is a symptom that may help in the determination of an
underlying mental illness. Moreover, there exist therapeutic
methods of alleviating feelings of misanthropy for those who are
not fond of the symptom.
