The Orcs of Thar are a proud and ancient people, who have been
roaming the Northern Steppes of Faerun since long before the
arrival of Humans on the continent. During the age of the Great
Wagh, the Orcs essentially controlled all of Northern Faerun,
with the elves being pushed either to the Moonshae Isles or deep
into the woods of Cormanthyr. Though they had very few permanent
settlements, they were able to maintain control of the land
through constant roaming and pillaging.
When Humans arrived, there were many great wars fought between
the two races. The Humans, allied with the elves, were
triumphing, due in large part to magical superiority, and to
numbers greater than those of the elves that the Orcs had
previously dealt with. In the final days of the wars, a powerful
Orc Shaman known to History as Gordok God-Binder somehow managed
to summon Bane, the Orcs patron god of Hate, in his corporeal
form. The Elven King Threnduin and the legendary Human
Shield-Maiden Sigrun Sverensson, who would later become the
first Human Queen of Faerun, managed to slay Bane in battle, but
not before he managed to crush most of the Elven host and
mortally wound King Threnduin. Following the death of their God,
the Orcs lost all hope for victory, and the Orcish Chief Grogg
the Kneeler sued for peace with the Humans and the elves. Thus
the once great Waghdom was confined to the area now known as
Thar.
In recent history, Thar has been very quiet. With their God
dead, the Orcs have never again held the great ambitions of
their forebears. However, a great host from Mulmaster recently
sacked the Monastery of the Yellow Rose, the most aggressive
action taken by the Northern Orcs in living memory.
