+Xian: a Monk Monastery
Nathlan was originally a hereditary monarchy of similar
ethnicity to the people of Cormyr. However, at the height of the
power of High Imaskar, the royal family of Nathlan sought to
ensure their independence by marrying into the Shou Dynasty.
Princess Arianne Atreides married Prince Liu Xian, the second
eldest son of the Shou Dynasty, and thus the ruling bloodline of
Nathlan became a junior branch of the Shou.
Liu Xian's son, Liu Han, sought to consolidate his power over
the region and stimulate the flagging economy by bringing in
workers from the Shou empire. Eventually, this created a state
that was primarily ethnically Shou. It was during this time that
the Great Monastery of Xian was constructed, in honor of Han's
father.
The North of Nathlan is the most urbanized area of the nation, a
veritable patchwork of classical Cormyrn and Shou architecture.
Here you can find the many influences of the Guild of the Golden
Dragon, and other criminal elements spilling over from the
Dragon Coast. Central and Southern Nathlan are primarily rural,
with few notably large settlements, excepting the Great
Monastery. The valley in which Nathlan sits creates ideal
weather conditions for growing rice and grain, so food is in
abundance, even long after the last harvests before winter have
been brought in.
Some say the best beer in all of Faerun comes from Nathlan.
