No one has heard from the Fey-peoples of Cormanthor forest for
decades. The occasional elf or eladrin ranger will wander out
from the forest and trade with the people of the Dales and
Denerim, but they seem to either not know of the inner workings
of the forest, or are unwilling to share them. Cormanthyr was
always isolationists, outsiders were historically banned
entrance to Myth Drannor and any part of the ancient forest's
interior. For the last few decades, however, even Cormyr, the
Elven Court's closest ally has heard no word. The elves's
silence has caused confusion, animosity, and increasing
instability for the Western Heartlands.
Life and Society
Before their disappearance, the elves of Cormanthyr were a
peaceful, even friendly people. Little is known of their inner
workings, but the rangers and hunters living on the edge of the
forest were always very graceful and kind to the people of the
Dales. Even if travelers wandered far enough into the the great
forest, few ever saw the great cities around them. Hidden by
spells, and camouflaged into the tree canopies, it would be
impossible to find one without being invited. Historically, the
Elves of the Court were proud, noble, and elite in magic and the
mundane.
Major Geographical Features
The great forest, Cormanthor, spans the entirety of the Moonsea,
south into what is now Denerim, and West until the Desertsmouth
Mountains. The area is not mapped, except for in ancient Cormyrn
logbooks, which are no doubt out-dated. Every section of the
forest feels somehow different, some regions are wild and
tangled, some feel open and serene. A day's hike through the
forest will either kill you, or leave you turned around back
where you started, as if the forest were keeping you out.
Regional History
The elves have inhabited Cormanthor long before any other
civilized race reached the Sea of Fallen Stars. The first
inhabitants of the forest were proto-elves, hardly recognizable
as their graceful, matured modern counterparts. These elves were
still a young people. In the great Crown-wars, elves had fought
amongst themselves for power, deciding the culture and practices
of the elven people. In the final Crown-war, elves had reached
Cormanthor Forest, this became the deciding battle-place for
elvendom. It was here, in fact, that the final battle of the
fourth Crown-war was fought. This was the site where Corellon
split the elven people in two, creating the Drow and banishing
them to the Underdark.
As mankind developed on Faerun, Cormanthyr could always be
counted as an ally. Cormanthyr was never an active friend to any
outside its forest, but when mankind was on its last leg, when
the forces of evil were readying their killing-blow, that was
when mankind could count on the Elven Court to route evil from
the Heartlands.
Cormyr and Cormanthyr were seen as the paragons of mankind and
elvendom in the Heartlands of Faerun. These two ancient nations
fought side by side in many of the most dire battles. A special
bond exists between them, although their fondness never really
materializes in the mundane world. There is some link between
the two, like between brothers who will die for one another, not
matter how distant and disconnected they become.
In fact, Cormyr derives its name from the same elven root-words
as Cormanthyr. "Corm" means bastion/paragon, and "(e)yr" means
honor, translated to "bastion of honor." Cormanthyr's name can
be translated to "bastion of peace"; "anthyr" means
serenity/peace. Cormyr was in fact a nick-name given by the
elves in the ancient times, a name which the Cormyr nobles
gladly accepted.
An entire generation of Cormyryns have not heard from
Cormanthyr. About 80 years ago, the few visits and
communications coming out of Cormanthyr halted abruptly, no one
knows why.
Rumors and Legends
None enter these woods.
