Life and Society
Some say that the Dragon Coast is Cormyr's Southern Province—
The syndicates and cartels of the Dragon Coast are very
intertwined with the politics and economy of the great nation.
Various rulers of Cormyr have attempted to quash the criminal
elements of their neighbor throughout history, but with little
result— As their armies would march through, the criminals would
simply go into hiding, and begin a guerilla war of
assassinations, bribery and threats which would eventually make
Cormyr lift their occupation.
Today, the Cormyryn King accepts the Dragon Coasts roll as a
necessary one for the good of his Kingdom— The Dragon Coast
provides the bulk of the sellswords and mercenaries that Cormyr
is using in an attempt to take the Vast Swamp to their East, as
well as prostitutes, and goods and materials from lands that
refuse trade. Without the smugglers and pirates of the Dragon
Coast, many doubt that Cormyr would be the economic powerhouse
it is today.
Dragon Coast raiding vessels are a familiar sight in the Sea of
Fallen Stars. Most coastal nations do not have the naval
strength to effectively patrol the waters, and so the pirates
are frequently able to do as the please without fear of
reprisal. Many of them operate out of Pirate Isle, a large
island in the center of the sea, as it is a relatively isolated
resupply location that is simultaneously close to many major
ports. A ship being raided rarely needs to fear violence—
because these are organized criminals, these pirates understand
that goods must continue to pass through trade routes if they
wish to continue to successfully exploit them, and so most raids
will simply impose a hefty "tax" and send the ship on its way.
The Guild of the Golden Dragon, by far the largest criminal
organization in Faerun, operates most of the gambling houses and
brothels in this region and the surrounding ones. All smaller
scale cartels and individual criminals in the Dragon Coast pay
and answer to the Guild. No one is sure of its leadership or
structure.
Most of the people who live on the Dragon Coast are not
criminals, though because of the reputation of the region,
Dragon Coasters in foreign lands are often met with deep
mistrust and suspicion. That said, most of the common folk at
least tacitly approve of the Guild's activities, as without
them, the area would have a much weaker economy, and would
likely be subject to the aggression of neighboring nations.
Slaving is a common practice along the Dragon Coast. Slaves are
acquired by many avenues, although recently the Guild seems to
have taken an increased interest in taking slaves from the
neighboring region of Gulthandor.
