*To be clear, most ships come down the fire river, towards
Woodfork or Bardertown. Very few head upriver towards Dragon
Falls, since the current is strong*
You do indeed find a path, more akin to a narrow track worn into
the forest floor by shuffling feet over many years. It snakes
away between large gnarled pines towards the northwest.
You've all heard stories of this kind of creature, or at least
creatures like it. Powerful magic users, they often lurk near
small villages, tormenting the populace in one way or another.
Many adventurers have met their end at the hands of hags, often
because they underestimate these seemingly frail old women.
You start to pick your way down the path, but the going is slow—
thorny vines seem to come out of nowhere and hook on your
clothes and cloaks, while the lower portions of the trail are
filled by thick mud that clutches at your boots. Now and then
you spy small humanoid effigies made from lashed together twigs
hanging from branches, and you get the unnerving sense that the
many ravens roosting in the tangled branches are watching you.
Out of the corner of your eyes, you spy what looks to be a
hunched, cloaked figure with matted hair hanging lankly out of
its hood, standing about ten feet off the path to your left. But
as soon as you look directly at it, it vanishes.

Asmundr says, "Did you see that?! A she-bitch, prepare yourselfs
for combat!" I use 2 bardic inspirations on clunk and geoffrey
       and cas Guidance on Geoffrey.

Clunk walks over to the spot the figure was and grabs a handful
of dirt and try to figure what beasts and creature live around
here, as well as the terrain.(nature lore check 16+1+4=21)

The terrain is a very old growth forest. It seems that the trees
here have not been disturbed in many hundreds, if not thousands
of years. In terms of terrestrial animals, you see evidence of
bears, boars, rats, wolves, deer, rats, ravens, owls... nothing
out of the ordinary, though you've heard that gnolls and other
more monstrous creatures dwell within this forest somewhere

"I suggest we proceed with caution. Let us continue along the
       trail, but everyone remain observant."
Geoffrey decides to move carefully through the underbrush along
the side path, immune to the terrain's hindering abilities,
while choosing to leave no prints. Employing advantageous fields
of view, he hopes to remain undetected.

You continue plowing through the tangled path, while your ranger
friend glides silently through the thicket off to the side.
As you move deeper into the woods, the branches overhead seem to
sag lower and lower, and the tangled thicket becomes reaches
further and further out into the path.
Again, you see the cloaked figure appear and vanish several
times as you walk. At various points, the figure is so distant
it is barely visible through the gloom, or so close that you can
hear its shallow breaths rattling out of its hood.
Finally, you come to a bit of a clearing, which a massive tree
dominates. It is at least twenty feet in diameter, its thick,
gnarled roots erupting out of the ground all around you. In the
boughs of the tree are more ravens than you've ever seen in one
place-- there is almost no room left on any of the branches.
Surrounding the tree are several human-like figures, stuffed
with straw and stuck on posts, like old rotting scarecrows. They
all appear to be facing you. The path you've been following ends
at the base of the tree, in front of a mossy wooden door nestled
between two root bases. Flanking the door you see several
zombies, their flesh ragged and rotten, bound to the roots by
thick ropes of thorny vines. They roll their heads to face you,
straining their necks and clicking their teeth in your
       direction.
Flickering flame light licks out from the gap between the door
       and the forest floor.

All of us or does 23 beat a Zombie's passive perception?
