       The Free City of Darosh
By: Rognvaldr Date: May 13, 2014, 12:18 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
While most of the city states were convinced the Union was
necessary, if only to protect them from future threats like the
Shardmind invasion, the Free City of Darosh remained
unconvinced. Darosh is the second largest city in the Calim
Desert, and has a reputation for being an impregnable fortress.
The city is nestled into the side of the Daroshi Mesa, from
which most of the gold in the region is mined. Thus, the king of
Darosh, Eldrin Oorthon, reckoned he could keep his independence
and still have the economic clout to contend on equal footing
       with The Union.

The wealth of Darosh is extraordinary. With the exception of the
miners, who are mostly slaves or indentured servants, the
Daroshi people enjoy lifestyles far more luxurious than most in
the Calim Desert, from the lowliest guardsman to the most
       highborn of nobles.
Because of their superior defensive position, the Daroshi have
little historical grievance with the half-orcs. They regard them
as exotic and fascinating savages, who do things to the weaker
cities that shouldn't be mentioned in polite company, but are
otherwise harmless. It is not uncommon to see half-orc servants
in some of the more wealthy houses, and especially the royal
palace, as the ability to capture half-orc tribesmen without
fear of reprisal is a demonstration of the city's superior
       status.
Darosh has been ruled by the Oorthon house since the city's
founding. Eldrin, like his predecessors, is a shrewd and cunning
leader, whose guile has often been as important to Darosh's
survival as the city walls. The people enjoy a great deal of
freedom under his leadership, though they are kept in line by
the ever-present knowledge that all of their closest allies
could be, and likely are, in Eldrin's pocket.
