On the Hunt
By: Okakouta Date: April 6, 2016, 9:57 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Ssyar smiles at Viri and Clunk, his rather sharp yellowing teeth
showing. "Is dis maan one of your men eh Clunk?" Ssyar motions
rather casually towards Viri. "I know you to be da gamblin' maan
Clunk - for dis hunt you be doin' da gamblin' wit' your life.
Ahh but da reward you ask?" Ssyar pulls out a piece of salted
salt pork from his loose-fitting short trouser pockets (where
these actually designed for Lizardfolk?) and snacks on it a
little bit, while looking at Viri. Behind him you can see some
other Lizardfolk cooking what looks like to be large pieces of
meat, it smells rather delicious.
"Now like I said, we of da Hunta's Lodge don't normally open
ourselves to da outside - but when you place Sss'nacle with
someone, you understand 'der spirit within. Clunk has da spirit
we be needin' to get such a great Hunt. If you can do dis, we be
prepared to offer you all entry - maybe some discounts. Anyting
you find from 'er can be yours, except for da fedders and da
head - we be needin' doze."
Ssyar points to the meat being cooked, some pelts hanging from
wooden walls, and in the distance what looks like some furniture
constructed from bleached bone. "Everyting from a great beast
can be used - plus you can say you took down da mighty
Archgriffin. Some fame der, " he puts his hands on his rather
slender hips.
"Don' worry maan, we be doin' da contracts - us tellin' where da
beast is also be part of da payment." Ssyar hands over a scroll
which has been rolled up and tied with some twine.
Unraveling the scroll you see the rather unremarkable, modest
almost, seal of the Hunter's Lodge with the words "CONTRACT
HUNT: THE ARCHGRIFFIN" written in red ink, you suppose may be
animal's blood. The payment details are rather clear stating:
"Payment upon return of Archgriffin head (good condition) and
several sacks of feathers, includes special admittance to Lodge
including Membership. All other portions of the carcass are
property of the hunting party. Advance payment is in the form of
information regarding the Archgriffin's whereabouts and hunting
expertise of Lodge members." There are then several blank lines,
presumably for names. At the very bottom is some scraggly red
ink - you could suppose it's a signature.
Ssyar looks on patiently as you all read over the contract, when
finished adds "Is dis what you be wantin'? I don' really see da
need dough... da Hunt is only good if you can feel its heart. Da
beast and you become one - part of you dies when you finish -
only to find that part again."

There are a large number of islands in the Ilha Mercador/Myrat
region, many of which have few or no people, sometimes hiding
wonders most people are unfamiliar with. You at least know what
a griffin is, maybe you've seen one on your sailing adventures
in the region, but you've never heard anyone refer to an
archgriffin. Either way, flying predators can be extremely
dangerous to boatsmen.

"Hunter's lodge, eh?" Viri says, suddenly very interested. "I
didn't realize your folk were a part of such organizations. A
glorious pursuit indeed, with rewards all its own." Viri rubs
his chin, grinning, and then says, "Clunk, my friend, if our
company hunted down this 'Archgriffin', we would be well loved
by mariners all across the isles. This could be a very
profitable venture for us indeed... And what a thrill, to
grapple with one of these kings of the sky! The first snake to
kill a griffin, hah! Have you a pen, sir, to sign this contract?
Or shall I use my vital life essence?"

Ssyar turns around and says something in a different language
you presume to be some form of "Lizardfolk". In a moment another
Lizardman appears (Clunk recognizes as Tha'ss'aum from your
Ss'nacle game) and he winks at Clunk, handing over a vial of red
ink and a bleached-bone pen.
Ssyar hands this over to the party smiling again. "I'm so happy
dat you be doin' dis wit uz maan. Da Hunt be someting special
when you be huntin' such great prey."

"Precisely Water Python, sometimes prestige is more important
then gold" Clunk nods and writes his name on the contract.
Looking at his lizard folk friends "if you planning to G*Amble
some more I'd be happy to win some more."

Viri signs the contract with a great flourish. Clunk (and anyone
else who is standing nearby) notices that his handwriting is
quite ornamental and precise, much better than one might expect
of a sea captain.
"A great man once told me," Viri says, admiring his glistening
red signature in the torchlight, "that a man is never more alive
than when he is danger of dying at the hands of a worthy foe."
He rolls the contract and slips it into the breast of his tunic,
and then smiles at Ssyar. "Or, in this case, talons."

"Hahaha, dis iz good maan!" Ssyar looks genuinely happy. He
extends and then quickly pulls his arm backwards, indicating to
come with, as Ssyar turns around and leads the group deeper in
to the cavern. Every manner of beast can been found as some kind
of remains or loot along the constructed wooden walls. There are
at least a few hundred people working in the area of the cavern,
the hum and buzz of people talking or carving wood as well as
the warmth of the many fires makes a comfortable setting. As you
round the corner of a wooden barrier, two large oak trees,
reaching up to the 100ft high cavern ceiling, become clearly
visible. The trees flank a wall of the cavern which has a
beautiful flaming spear painted on it.
On the large fur rug underneath the tree sits a half-lizard
half-bird with leathery looking wings, imitating those of a
dragon. If not dressed in clothing and decorated in such a
purposeful way, you might be surprised of its sentience. The man
appears to be lighting some incense close to the wall near an
extremely over-sized book, and turns to you. Piercing
dragon-like eyes gaze upon you as he sits down a picks up a
necklace of presumably animal bones.
"Dis maan be Darakum, da expert of da hunt. He also be da keepa
of da Hunta's Tome, left to us lizard folk by two of da original
professional huntas. Here we can show you da basics of da true
hunta."
You see the book is already open to a page, if you can read
Giant is says "Griffin". Ssyar decides to read the page aloud
for everyone's benefit.
"The griffin looks like a combination of a ferocious cat and a
giant bird. It usually inhabits primeval highlands and builds
its nests on unreachable mountain summits. The griffin preys on
large mammals and, being a highly territorial creature, fiercely
defends its hunting grounds. When the first colonists appeared
and trade routes expanded, griffins were known to attack
settlers and merchants in defense of their territory. Griffins
are tough opponents and their strength should not be
underestimated. Obstinate and aggressive, they make deadly use
of their ability to fly during combat, swooping down on their
enemies, knocking them to the ground and ripping them to shreds
with their claws and beak."
When Ssyar finishes narrating Darakum speaks for the first time
in a weak, hoarse, and deep voice: "Hiatea teaches that Nature
is both creator and destroyer, and that admitting defeat is the
worst shame a giant can bear. Still, some prices are too high to
pay even for victory, for Hiatea is a goddess with tendencies
toward good. Use nature to combat nature, even fire is natural
when lightning strikes."
"He means use da basics, and be sssmart, " elaborates Ssyar.
"Certain beasts be disliking da roots and flowers, rope and
fire." He looks back at the book and goes to a section that's
more of a list:
"Traditionally griffin is attracted to the scent of Buckthorn,
so it can be used as an effective lure.
Large enough nets can be employed, but users should be strong
and cautious.
Strong gusts of wind or force may be used to cause griffin to
land (crash).
When disheartened the griffin may decide to flee - use of
mounts is advised.

genius eh maan?"
"You can ask me any of da questions maan." He hands Clunk and
Viri another scroll, this one appears to be made out of vellum
and has a map drawn on it. You also receive a few empty sacks,
some empty vials, and some alchemy paste. "On dis island you be
findin' da beast - you be wantin' tree or four days for da hunt
I guess, but less dan half a day to get der. Dis island you be

you to help me create this oil Ssyar. I would also like to get
some nets, lead on to the venders." Clunk says with a smile
forming. "Ill show this lot real strength bring down this

yourselves! In dis way you earn da right to take down da beast.
But if you need some help wid da gaterin' and nets..."
Ssyar leads your around the enclosure to some of his friends,
most of which are lizardfolk, not to say there aren't other
peoples around.
