Akanul was once a strong kingdom, famed for its outlandish
architecture and finely crafted magical items. Its Inhabitants
were the Diaspora of the Genasi population of the Southern
Continent, fleeing their crumbling homeland after The Shattering
had turned most of it to ash and dust. They lived in relative
peace on the Northern border of the mostly uninhabited Golden
Sea, with most of their military might focused on holding their
border with Chessenta.
When the Spellplague hit, however, the mostly magical Genasi
guttered out and died. There are horrible tales of the Genasi
screaming in agony as the magical energies that gave them life
ran wild, and, shortly thereafter, of all the Genasi falling to
the floor as mere stony husks. In a matter of minutes, the
entire population of Akanul was extinguished.
Ever since, few dare tread the Nation that Perished. Even
looters and pirates steer well clear of it, fearing the vengeful
ghosts of an entire people. From those who do enter the desolate
city, one can hear eery reports: Half-eaten meals rotting at the
table, laundry not yet hung from the line, the melted remains of
a sword still stuck in a long cooled forge. And all around, the
dead.
With the Genasi gone, the Turmish Republic seeks to move in to
acquire the rich mines of the region. Chessenta, however, has
also begun an aggressive campaign into the now open territory.
They are entrenched in bitter warfare across the land, and
neither seems to be gaining any ground.
