Aisha follows quickly behind you toward the keep.
"You mention only the king. Then, has there been no word of my,"
her usually forceful voice falters slightly at this word,
"father?"
*Her eyes are made brighter and more piercing by the grime on
her face, and her face is flushed from riding. You are also
impressed by her confidence in the face of adversity. Right now
you would rate her a solid 8.5, if not higher. Non-palace buards
have only three ranks: footman, sergeant, and watch commander.
There is an informal hierarchy of seniority as well, with newer
buards expected to defer to the judgement of more veteran
buards. Both you and Aisha bear the rank of footman, though she
has been a buard for a year and a half longer than you. You also
have heard rumors that she was suggested for promotion to
sergeant, but that this suggestion was blocked by Commander
Shepard, who felt that such a suggestion was only made in an
attempt to curry favor with him. More information on buards and
their organization can be found on the Buards of Bardertown
Organization page

*Honestly, I don't remember where Shepard is. I wasn't at the
last session, did we bring him or not?*

*The last you saw of Shepard was the night of the attack. He was
mounted and in full equipment, mustering the buards in the main
plaza. He stated that his intention was to meet the oncoming
enemy, and hold them at or near the walls while the city was
evacuated.*

"... Commander Shepard took full command of the royal forces in
defense of Bardertown. I should think that I know less than you,
as we were ordered to evacuate the Royal Court in only the first
wave of combat. I'm sorry if that was not the answer you would
hope for, I would think Shepard is leading the evacuation party.
He is a brazen and fierce warrior, but a sensible Commander. His
men value his leadership more than anything and would not live
to hear his final command." Asmundr says in a reassuring,
sensitive, and inspiring tone.

"Thank you." She says, quietly. "As he always said though... He
is just a man."
Entering the keep, you see Rognvaldr, Scarfunkel, Lord Pendragon
and Anders seated around a table. Anders and Lord Pendragon are
talking in hushed tones while pouring over several maps spread
before them. Rognvaldr looks up as you approach, and, seeing
Aisha, tears begin to well in his eyes.
"My lord," Aisha says, standing at attention at the end of the
table. Her voice is trembling now. The others look up now as
well. "Footman Aisha Shepard, reporting for duty." Everyone is
silent. Rognvaldr nods. "It has come to my attention that the
buards are currently without a Lord Commander." You see that she
is shaking now, and you can see tears welling in her eyes.
"There are buards outside who need orders. Who shall we look to
now that...?" She chokes on the last word, and starts sobbing
quietly.
Everyone is silent for a moment, then, quietly, Anders says, "I
am the senior most palace buard here. I will take the mantle of
Lord Commander."

"Sir, perhaps it's not my place, but among the sworn men at the
Bar College of the Lost Falls is Palace Sergeant Blaster. There
are many like him training there. Although they have taken their
oaths and practice hitherto unexposed rituals and martial
practices, I think in these times we may try to pull from their
experienced retinue... with that said I could not claim that
Blaster or anyone else would be more qualified for Lord
Commander."
"Sir, seeing as my Crusaders are the last operating commissioned
party, where does that leave us?"
Also, just for kicks, I'm going to establish what Asmundr knows
of the Harpers, cause we have the coin in our cache and we're
always glossing over this subject.
Cultural Lore: 13
Political Lore: 13
Forbidden Lore would probably make the most sense, but I am not
trained. I also wonder if another FoL should exist for secret
organizations, like "Secret lore"

Anders looks at you indignantly, and is about to speak when
Aisha cuts him off.
"Blaster was never a palace buard, merely a sergeant. And he
resigned that post when he left for the Bar college." Her voice
has regained its strength, though you hear an occasional
tremble. She turns to you with hardened eyes, and says, "And it
is certainly not your place, footman."
Rognvaldr sits silently, still in an apparent state of shock.
Aisha turns again to Anders, saying "What are your orders, Lord
Commander?"
Anders grabs his chin, now covered in the shadow of a beard, and
stares at the map. His face looks creased and tired. "We have
received word from the rest of your party via familiar that they
have cleared the way to a small vale in the mountain, currently
occupied by the Impilturian rebel queen and her retinue. If we
can strike some sort of deal with them, we may be able to gather
enough strength to retake the capital." He looks at you and
says, "You will accompany me and what buards we have here in
escorting your king to the rebel camp. We must show up in force,
lest they see an opportunity to take advantage of our current
vulnerability. Gather your things and be prepared to leave at
first light."
Aisha salutes, turns on her heel, and strides quickly out of the
keep.
Lord Pendragon, so far silent, speaks up at this. "Lord
Commander, if you take with you your remaining buards, we will
have a difficult time holding this settlement against a
determined attacker. The people--"
"The safety of the king," Anders says, cutting in, "is our first
priority, my lord. I will endeavor to find a place for your
people and our refugees in the vale, but we cannot show our
desperation by bringing them along now."
*I would say that this isn't really forbidden lore. Forbidden
lore covers stuff that most people would look down upon you for
knowing, like necromancy and other dark arts. I think political
and cultural lore are appropriate here, since The Harpers are
sort of a folkloric organization.
You've heard many stories of the Harpers... They are a legendary
group that seeks to keep the world free from tyranny by
maintaining the balance of power throughout the land, and
promoting freedom wherever they go. From what stories you've
heard, they seem to have existed since the founding of the first
human kingdoms in Faerun. Some say that they are shapeshifters,
which is why they can remain unseen. Others think that they are
angels lead by some forgotten god. Still others say that "they"
are not "they" at all, but rather one master wizard who can
teleport between all the realms of the land, and change minds
with a glance. No one can provide any concrete information on
them, even whether or not they truly exist, but the success of
many uprisings and the removal of many wicked governors
throughout history has been attributed to them.*

"King Rognvaldr, I plead for your understanding, the contract of
an adventuring party is not something to be taken lightly. Sure,
I am the Grand Halen representative in the Crusaders of
Bardertown, but their interests are my own. I am the only full
citizen of the lot, the rest being distant travelers, urchins,
and foreign thrillseekers. We have had no word from any other
adventuring groups commissioned by Grand Halen, so there is no
precedent. As it currently stands, my party cannot have its
commission fulfilled by the crown, our contract is therefore
void. I don't see how you could call us an adventuring party
whatsoever in this current state. Furthermore, I can't see my
service as a footman being of any value. My group has proved our
worth in more specialized services, and we are currently
occupied in what may be the riskiest and most important endeavor
we have taken to (asmundr flashes a picture of the one-eyed orc
telepathically to Rognvaldr). I beseech thee to recognize The
Crusaders of Bardertown as an independent party, and to accept
my leave from the Buards."
*also where did we leave that orc?

Anders' face contorts with a look of disgust and rage.
"You filthy coward," he seethes, "I should--"
Rognvaldr grabs Anders by the arm. He stares at you for a
moment, his face stoic. Then you hear his voice wriggle its way
into your mind.
"Do what you must. Take the orc. And the girl, if you will.
There is more to this than any of us know. I could not save our
people, despite the Diem's warnings. 'Look to the North,' he
said. 'There will be blood on the snow. The strength of men
shall not succeed. But there is another way.' It is up to you
now to find it."

"Believe me, it pains me to take this risk, but you must all
trust that this is in your best interests as well." Asmundr puts
the charter on the desk and begins walking out, "Now starts a
new chapter in all our histories, let us not fear the challenges
we must take."
