Proficiency Bonuses
You add your proficiency bonus to any ability check, attack, or
saving throw that you are proficient in. You gain proficiency in
this things through your Race, Class, Background, Feats, and
other such means. This Proficiency bonus is listed on your
Class's table in the Player's Handbook. Your proficiency bonus
scales up per level automatically.
I will list it here for ease.
Lvls 1-4: Proficiency bonus +2
Lvls 5-8: Proficiency bonus +3
Lvls 9-12: Proficiency bonus +4
Lvls 13-16: Proficiency bonus +5
Lvls 17-20: Proficiency bonus +6
You may not add your Proficiency bonus to checks you are not
proficient with.
Alternatives
Everytime you have the opportunity to add your Proficiency bonus
to an Ability check, Attack roll, or Saving throw you may
instead apply one of the following bonuses. These can reflect a
roleplaying choice, showing that your character is going about a
check in a different manner. These options do not change the
average value of your Proficiency bonus, but do change the
nature of it's probable value.
Skill die may be used to show that your character is attempting
a check more audaciously, willing to take more risk in his
greatsword Attack or use experimental methods in his medicine
check. Instead of using the static value for your Proficiency
bonus, you may roll a skill die. The following proficiency
bonuses correspond to these skill die values.
+2: 1d3
+3: 1d6
+4: 1d8
+5: 1d10
+6: 1d12
As another option, your character may go about a check with less
recklessness, but still experiment a bit with his attempt. The
following proficiency bonuses correspond to the following.
+2: 1d3
+3: 1d3+1
+4: 2d3
+5: 2d3+1
+6: 3d3
If a feature, such as the Rogue's Expertise, allows you to
double the proficiency bonus of a check, you instead roll double
the skill die.
