       The Gathering Storm

Alright guys— Last night we had our final encounter of Winter
Break. Here's the story so far:
After the attempt on Rognvaldr's life, many of Grand Halen's
  HTML http://dndgurnee.createaforum.com/grand-halen/grand-halen-general/<br
/>adventuring parties were recalled to Bardertown, in order to
provide extra security for the comatose king. This left the
kingdom with an over-abundance of assignments for adventuring
parties, and meant that our party, the Crusaders of Bardertown,
were given a variety of options for their next assignment.
After not so much deliberation, the party decided to investigate
       the disappearance of Cormyr's
  HTML http://dndgurnee.createaforum.com/holy-cormyrn-empire/holy-cormyrn-empire-general/<br
/>prince, Lyrion VII, during a diplomatic mission to Denerim
  HTML http://dndgurnee.createaforum.com/denerim/denerim-general/.<br
/>Cormyr blamed Denerim, and the two nations were on the brink o
       f
war when the party began their quest. The party discovered that
the prince's ship had been attacked by pirates from the Dragon
       Coast
  HTML http://dndgurnee.createaforum.com/dragon-coast/dragon-coast-general/,<br
/>not the navy of Denerim, but unfortunately their only witness
was killed by Dragon Coast assassins.
The party then departed for the Dragon Coast by way of
       Gulthandor
  HTML http://dndgurnee.createaforum.com/gulthandor/gulthandor-general/,<br
/>since few ships will sail directly into the pirate nation. In
Gulthandor, the party discovered some wonderful things,
       including a loyal hunting dog

       a mechanical
       man
  HTML http://dndgurnee.createaforum.com/npc%27s/the-curator/,
       and the
ruins of a wondrous city. However, after an incident involving a
giant sloth, the party was violently banished by the native
druids to a swamp under the mountains between Gulthandor and
       Nathlan
  HTML http://dndgurnee.createaforum.com/nathlan/nathlan-general/.
Eventually emerging into Nathlan from their subterranean prison,
the party headed to the nearest town in order to get a real meal
and some much needed rest and supplies. They said farewell to
their very wounded companion, Lyrina, who stayed behind to
recuperate. They gained, however, a new companion, Aliss, an
inquisitive half-elf ranger. They departed for the Dragon Coast
with their new-found companion in a bison-drawn cart, and found
some interesting things along the way, including a working
portal to a far-away land, and monks from the Porcelain Temple,
who claimed they could heal Rognvaldr.
Reaching Westgate, the Dragon Coast's largest city and base of
the pirates they sought, the party was greeted by two mysterious
figures, who later revealed themselves to be members of an
organization known as the Harpers. With the Harpers help, the
party staged heist on the Dragon's Hoard ****, owned by the
pirate suspected in the princes kidnapping. Not everything went
as smoothly as planned, but the party made it out more or less
unharmed, and learned that the pirates were contracted to kidnap
Prince Lyrion by Prince Lyrion himself, and deliver him and his
companion, a paladin named Alistair Dale, to the port of Uthmere
       in Damara
  HTML http://dndgurnee.createaforum.com/damara/damara-general/.
This whole process has taken a little over a month. Realizing
that they might require more help, and hoping to update the
crown on the progress of their investigation, the party decided
to sail for Bardertown. And there we find our heroes, Asmundr,
Gasputin, and Aliss, stepping off of the longship the Red Stag,
and onto the docks of Bardertown.

"Ah, yes, we're back to the glory and splendor of Bardertown!
Come, we have much to report to the crown. Perhaps those monks
have recovered King Rognvaldr out of his stupor." Asmundr begins
heading to the Palace. "I'm sure they'll be very interested in
       the treasures we've recovered."

The day is hot, dark, and humid. As you walk through the wharf
district, you can see heat lightning flashing through the low,
swollen storm-clouds which crowd the horizon. Fishmongers and
other merchants cry out their wares from street stalls, and
irritated, sweaty citizens jostle their way through the
seemingly too-narrow streets. Passing under the city walls, you
see the buards stationed at the gate sweltering in their armor.
Entering the central plaza of the city, you see it far more
crowded than you left it. Life, it seems, has returned to the
city. The usual merchant carts are out and about, and there's a
large crowd gathered around the Thunderdome, hooting and
cheering at some combat going on within. The palace, however, is
no less guarded. You pass no less than twenty buards on the way
up the steps, and though they all recognize you, you notice that
there are crossbows trained on you from the upper levels the
       entire way.
Entering the palace, you see a very small, but familiar, crowd
gathered in the main hall. In place of the table of councilors
previously at the head of the hall, you see only Shepard, seated
in a simple wooden chair next to Rognvaldr's throne. In front of
him are a few ragged and injured adventurers, seemingly making a
report. Behind them are the four monks you encountered in
Nathlan, and behind them you spy Geoffrey, Lyrina and Hoss. To
the sides of the hall, you spot an even more curious crowd: an
android, a Lilty, and a pixie chatting quietly.

Geoffrey uncrosses his legs and pushes himself away from the
wall. His hood is down as he walks forward to greet the
       returning adventurers.
"Hail my companions, it has been some time! You appear a little
worse for wear than when you departed."

"Hmph, ah yes the Dambrathian Emissary. Have your Drow eyes been
satisfied with what they've seen? Or is the light of this
Nation's glory too bright for you to see?" Asmundr cheers his
tone up and continues on towards Shepard "Sir! It's great to
finally be back, we've have had hell out there."

Seeing Asmundr approach, Shepard dismisses the injured
adventuring party and stands. His beard has grown thicker since
you left, and he looks even more tired and gaunt then he did
       before.
"Much to discuss indeed." He says slowly. "Have you found the
truth of what happened to Prince Lyrion?" You can sense a
       certain anxiousness in his voice.

"Yes sir," he hands the copied text from Hao Ma's ledger to
Shepard, "This comes straight from Hao Ma's official ledger. It
seems the Prince was in cahoots with the Crowclaw pirates. We
have recovered several other artifacts that might interest the
crown sir. Did those Nathlanese monks bring you our findings?"
(Dark Longsword of Netheril Slaying, 3 moonsilver ingots, silver
necklace, info on ancient machine in Starmantle, Scarf smells
like ginger, 55 gold). "Here is a map of our journeys, and we
have also recovered this sir," Asmundr brings out the basketball
       sized orb of platinum.
Looking the Lilty and Pixie in the room Asmundr goes on to say,
"I see that you may have heard some news of our travels
       already."

Geoffrey walks over to Asmundr, takes his hands out of his
pocket, and puts his hand forward, as if indicating a greeting.
"I'm afraid I've only seen you in passing around the palace, but
it is good you know to whom you speak. And as for the city of
which you speak, its walls remain intact, but its soul
vanquished." He pauses. "You'll have to forgive me, being morbid
is a custom from where I come from." Geoffrey cracks a smile as
if that was a small joke.

Asmundr, not trusting this Drow replies, "OH, and I'm sure you
do just well in such soulless lands, dark-one. I think
understand what has brought you here. You saw a chance to weave
your Underdark web of influence into a great Nation full of
tragedy? And without the powerful leadership of Rognvaldr, I
trust you haven't had too much contest?" Asmundr turns back to
Shepard, "Sir, why do you let this cursed man dim the torches in
       our Palace?"

"I can assure you Bard; I am many things, but a kin of the
Defiler I am not. My skin may be dark, but hardly my intentions.
Although you're spot-on regarding the tragedy, you may recall it
is Rognvaldr's judgement that lets me stay here, or did you not
see my name on the charter of yours?"
