What accent do you have and what do you feel it says about you?
What do others think?

I feel I do not have a local accent and I have made it as
polished as I can! My mother was Irish and my father was
Scottish, I have witnessed a lot of people saying to me they
cannot understand what my parents said because of the accent. I
felt astounded because I had no trouble what so ever, of course!
But also because I always tried to listen to people with accents
and decipher what was being said, I was shy to ask and have been
until quite recently.
I lived in Dubai 30 years ago and went to school with very
diverse people and was around people from all over the world,
not just Arabs. I never felt it was acceptable to question
someones accent, of course if it causes misunderstandings then
that is different, but I felt it was rude to mock. I still have
trouble today with mocking accents, even on comedy shows.
For example The Simpsons has recently been criticised for its
character Apu, who is a shop keeper and heavily accent from the
Indian continent, I always cringed when he came on.
I have found others do not know where to place me and have
always approached me with caution! I have dumbed down my
accent, having been born in Kent I have often put a London tone
to my accent. This has tended to make people feel more at ease
with me and not feel like I am better than them.
However, I do this less now as I find not having an accent makes
it easier for all people to approach me. A muslim neighbour was
concerned at Brexit and wanted to know where I stood, I did not
offer an opinion, and she said "Ah you are one of us!" I am not,
but I felt she meant accepting of others and their opinions and
not having a local accent helped. I feel in times of stress
people judge other by their accent because it is the first bit
of evidence they get about who you are, clothes can be
deceptive.

I touched upon my accent in my previous post on the ethnicity,
so I will keep it short.
When I was doing my psychology degree, my schoolmates used to
call me 'Scotvakian' - as apparently my accent was a mixture of
the two, Slovak and Scottish. Since then, I went full blown
Glaswegian (as we moved there) but I lost it. It's more 'Central
Scotland' now. I seem to pick up accents wherever I live. People
can't really place me anywhere specific.
When I lived in Italy, I learned the Italian language in the
local Bolognese accent as I lived in Bologna. Years later I was
told by an Italian person they could still hear it when I spoke
Italian.
I guess it's a gift. I was once asked if I played any
instruments, and unfortunately I can't. They thought I must have
a good 'musical ear' as apparently the language and music
processing is similar. I guess music is a form of language and a
language is a form of music...
I love jazz. So maybe in another lifetime I'll be a saxophone
player or if I get fed up with hypnotherapy and will want to
change my career. Although maybe a tad too late for it ;D

Hi Both
You are lucky to be able to to so easily and naturally to change
your accent. Perhaps this is because you have moved a lot. When
you move your accent is different from your present locality and
you may get comments on your accent and 'regression to the norm'
means you will tend to gradually change your accent.
Someone who has always lived in the same area will find it
difficult to modify their accent unless they take elocution
lessons.
What is important is that the client understands you and vice
versa.

Yes, I must admit I have some issue with heavily accented
people, which is discriminatory on my part ::)

it could be that our accents can adapt because we moved about.
Having said that, I met people from abroad who moved about as
well and lived here for a long time and never lost their native
one. A French friend of mine springs to mine. His is so heavy
that sometimes it seems he actually speaks French rather than
English! So I don't really know. I guess I am lucky.
I usually adapt very quickly wherever I lived; however one
accent I cannot get and have always struggled with is Scouse. If
I had a hypnotherapist speaking Scouse to me, I think that
therapy would go nowhere :-[ ;D

Totally agree with that, I find the scouse accent very hard to
listen to. I also find the Welsh accent distracting and would
have difficulty with hypnosis in that accent.

Hi Slavka
I suppose the NLP fans will claim that it is our way of
processing. Those who have a large proportion of auditory
processing are probable more aware of accents and may adapt to
their accent where they live more easily.
