       Is it always necessary for the sexual orientation of the
       therapist to match that of the client?

       I don't think so.
       I have worked with gay men and women and it has never been an
       issue; although I understand if clients felt more
       'heard/understood' if the therapist was of the same orientation.
       Having said that, I never had a client asking me what  my sexual
       orientation was.
       Perhaps the age comes to equation here as well. I've certainly
       heard some pretty homophobic views even from therapists (of
       certain age), so perhaps clients may feel more comfortable with
       someone younger who is perhaps more open minded. Just pondering
       here.

       I agree with what you are saying Slavka.  I have dealt with
       different clients and I have never been asked what sexual
       orientation I am.  I would also not ask a client what
       orientation they were.  It would be their right to disclose this
       information if they wanted.
       I totally agree with Slavka the age of the therapist may be
       relevant.  Those of a younger generation may have a wider
       understanding of LGBT issues because they have grown up with the
       rising awareness.  Whereas older generations may still remember
       when it was a crime and much of society feared sexual
       orientation and they may still feel frightened that it is wrong
       and against the establishment.  Indeed, a lot of the LGBTQ work
       is politically motivated because members of these groups have
       been marginalised and their human rights ignored.  A therapist
       could work with these issues regardless of their sexual
       orientation, the clients would have the same feelings.
