       to break out the bottles and sing and belt out the works of the
       most famous Scot poet

       It's that time of year again when it's kilt and tartan trews as
       far as the eye can see and the haggis go into hiding.
       As the world raises a dram to the Bard on Burns Night, we offer
       you 25 interesting facts about Scotland's greatest poet, Robert
       Burns.
       1. His family name was actually Burnes . He was born in Alloway,
       Ayrshire, on January 25, 1759, to William Burnes and Agnes
       Broun.
       2. Burns wrote his first poem aged 15. He ended up writing 716
       altogether, all of which have been archived and recorded by the
       BBC.
       3. The notorious lothario fathered 12 children, nine of them
       with his most famous love, wife Jean Armour.
       4. His other lovers included Ann Park, Elizabeth Paton, Agnes
       Maclehose, known as Clarinda in their secret letters, and her
       maid Jenny Clow.
       5. In 2009, Burns became the first person to appear on a
       commemorative Coca-Cola bottle.
       6. His famous song Auld Lang Syne is the third most performed
       song in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World
       Records – behind Happy Birthday and For (S)He’s a Jolly Good
       Fellow.
       7. Auld Lang Syne has played a central part in some of the
       biggest movies of all time, such as When Harry Met Sally, Sex
       and the City, Minions, Elf, Forrest Gump, It’s a Wonderful Life
       and The Poseidon Adventure.
       8. The song has been covered by artists including Bing Crosby,
       Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, BB King, The
       Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix and Mariah Carey.
       9. The first Burns supper was held on July 21, 1801, when a
       group of nine of his pals got together in Alloway to mark five
       years since his death. The meal was haggis, his works were
       recited and a tribute speech was given, which has now become
       known as the Immortal Memory. Subsequent events moved to his
       birthday, with suppers now held all over the world to  celebrate
       Burns and Scots culture in general.
