       Devon Thomas Charged With Killing Second Child

       bail since he was charged in November.

       > The Department of Children and Family Services removed a
       1-year-old sibling from the home after Tayveon's killing,
       spokeswoman Veronica Resa said.

       > Prosecutors said Thomas punched Tayveon in front of his mother
       shortly before his death while the family was at Lincoln Park
       Zoo. When she tried to stop him, Thomas choked her until she
       lost consciousness, said Assistant State's Attorney Jamie
       Santini.

       > Halloween, Thomas punched Tayveon multiple times in the chest
       and torso while wearing boots, stomped on his legs, arms and
       body as the boy tried to block the blows, prosecutors said.

       > Within a few hours of Tayveon's death, his mother began to
       have contractions, and she delivered her baby after Thomas
       assaulted her, prosecutors said. Janylah, who suffered seizures,
       remained hospitalized until her death this month.
       >
       > Thomas was arrested after Tayveon's death and made a
       videotaped statement to detectives admitting he punched Tayveon
       in the chest four times and kicked him once in the stomach. He
       told detectives he was angry because he thought the boy
       defecated in his bedroom, prosecutors said.

       > Signs of abuse on Tayveon included fresh cuts to his face and
       scalp, abdominal bleeding and contusions to both lungs,
       prosecutors said. He also had an old fracture to the left arm
       and scars from burns on his body.
       >
       > The Cook County medical examiner's office determined Tayveon
       died of multiple injuries due to child abuse. It later
       determined Janylah's death to be from complications of brain
       injuries caused by a lack of oxygen and blunt-force injuries due
       to assault, prosecutors said.

       Why did this mother stay. She witnessed abuse repeatedly. How
       did she expect this to end.
