> A 25-year-old Slidell area man has been booked with
first-degree murder, accused of beating his 7-week-old son to
death. Anthony Dearmas was being held in the St. Tammany Parish
jail in connection with the death of Karter Smith, who was born
on March 25, Sheriff Randy Smith said Tuesday (May 16).
> [....]
> Smith said deputies were called Wednesday to investigate a
report of an infant who wasn't breathing at 1200 Eagle Lake
Blvd., located in a Slidell area trailer park. The infant was
revived by emergency medical technicians and rushed to a local
hospital.
>
> Doctors determined the infant had sustained severe head
injuries, which prompted investigators to question Dearmas. He
initially fabricated a story, but eventually told detectives he
"punched Karter off of a counch, knocking him to the ground,
causing him to fall on his head," the sheriff said.
>
> Dearmas said he became frustrated due to Karter's constant
crying, according to authorities. Deputies arrested him on a
charge of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
>
> Later in the week, doctors determined that Karter was brain
dead, and he was pronounced dead on Saturday. An autopsy
conducted Monday determined the cause of death to be blunt force
trauma to the head. Later that day, Dearmas was charged
additionally with first-degree murder, Smith said.
>
> St. Tammany Parish Coroner Charles Preston said the infant
suffered seven fractures to the skull and bleeding inside of the
skull. He said the injury could have resulted from direct
pressure to the skull, such as squeezing the head or kneeling on
it.
> [....]
> Dearmas, who has no other felony arrests on his record, was
the only adult at home with the child when the incident
occurred. He said other children may have been present. The
child's mother, who was not identified, is said to be
distraught.
