Spokane Co. SO solve 51 yr old Murder, but Suspect dies 3 days
before they Received Arrest Warrant

In Washington state, Spokane County Sheriff's Office announced
on Facebook this past Monday that they had solved the 1967 year
old murder of Dorothy Fielding, and the shocker was a twofer and
then some - first the suspect was one of their own, 85 year old
Duke Pierson, a former Spokane Sheriff's Deputy who was living
in Covington County, Alabama.
Secondly, Pierson had died only three days before the Sheriff's
Office was able to obtain an arrest warrant for him.
Dorothy Fielding was aged 31 when she was reported missing on
August 19, 1967, and her body was discovered eight months later,
badly decomposed, in a shallow grave close to the 7-Mile Off
Road Vehicle Park in Spokane.
It gets creepier from there my friends, because one other woman
went missing around the same time and later found murdered,
while yet another woman was found during the same time frame in
an apparent "suicide", and law enforcement immediately suspected
that all three deaths were related.
One of the women was Ruby Lampson, aged 47, who was reported
missing on June 6, 1967.
In 1971, Ruby's decomposed remains were found, also in a shallow
grave, and very close to the exact same location where Dorothy
Fielding was discovered.
A third woman, who's identity may come as little surprise to
those of us who follow true-crime, was Mrs. Sandra Pierson, the
wife of Duke Pierson, who was believed to have "committed
suicide" after her body was found in her family garage on
September 12, 1967, with a hose leading from the tailpipe to a
rear window of the vehicle.
According to the Sheriff's reports at the time, the tailpipe had
aluminum foil stuffed in it and the garage door was closed, but
the situation seemed more than a tad suspicious because
Sheriff's deputies discovered a few things that simply did not
compute with the usual circumstances of suicide by vehicular CO
poisoning.
… "They noted the garage contained a lot of exhaust but found
the engine of the vehicle was not running although the ignition
was on and the gas tank was approximately 1/2 full," the
sheriff's office said. "Detectives were unable to determine a
reason why the engine was not running." …
Another glaring fact that set off alarm bells to the Sheriff's
deputies was that Sandra was *20 weeks pregnant* at the time of
her supposed suicide, and she died only a month after Fielding's
disappearance and three months after Lampson's disappearance.
… "Due to Sandra’s small stature, several people including
Sandra’s now adult children believe Sandra wasn’t physically
capable of opening and closing the heavy, possibly
malfunctioning, garage door on her own," police said. "Both
children suspect Duke was involved in their mother’s death." …
Indeed, I'd also wager that being 5 months pregnant could make a
petite woman have even more difficulty with a heavy and possibly
malfunctioning garage door.
Most women, especially those who're of small stature and build
have more than just a slight "baby bump" at 5 months, and trying
to life a large heavy 1967 era garage door is more than just a
bit cumbersome in such a condition.
The cases went cold for decades until April of 2018, when the
Major Crimes unit received a tip that informed them that
Fielding had been a member of the Falls View Tavern Bowling
Team, which grabbed the attention of Detective Kirk Keyser.
Keyser discovered that both Fielding and Lampson had gone to the
tavern, and were friends.
When he began to review the Fielding case, he found reports
which indicated that before Fielding has gone missing, she was
having an affair with none other than... you guessed it: Duke
Pierson.
… "With these similarities, Detective Keyser began reviewing all
three cold cases and worked to obtain additional information,"
police said. "This led to Friday’s arrest warrant for Pierson
charging him with the murder of Fielding."
But that's when authorities discovered that Pierson died on Jan.
22, reportedly due to natural causes, according to the sheriff's
department.
Pierson had worked for the sheriff's office from 1959 before
quitting in 1966. Former co-workers said he suddenly stopped
showing up for work and his "his attitude and demeanor changed
significantly."
"When coworkers contacted Duke to determine why he wasn’t coming
to work, Duke threatened them, saying he would shoot/kill them,
for no apparent reason," police said. "Duke was described as
clearly being mentally unstable." ...
Detective Keyser visited Duke Pierson in Alabama in April of
2018, where during the interview, Pierson denied ever knowing
Dorothy Fielding or Ruby Lampson. He claimed to have "dated
thousands of women and if he did date them, it couldn't have
lasted more than a week.".
Spokane County Sheriff's Office is asking that anyone with
information about Duke or Sandra Pierson, Dorothy Fielding or
Ruby Lampson to call Detective Keyser at 509-477-6611.

I wonder where he worked after that, assuming he did have to
support himself somehow. More importantly, were there any dead
bodies near where he subsequently worked? He killed 3 women and
I find it hard to believe he stopped from 1966 on.
