I do too, the juvenile black bears can be incredibly accepting
of another species when separated or on their own.
We had one at about 85lbs, who came up on the back porch when
our deaf dog Spook was alive, and it just climbed up on the
built in wooden bench and ate the cat food, not 2 feet away from
Spook who was fine with it all.
Once the bear saw me, he slowly turned around, climbed down off
the bench and politely exited the porch, while Spook gave me
this look that said, "My new friend was hungry, so I told him to
try the cat food.". :o
The boy may have encountered a cub that was looking for group
safety and warmth, and it's quite possible that they "hung
together" during the cold weather, and it could have shown the
boy to lick the morning leaves for water and what berries were
safe to eat.
