The second issue is associated with the way in which the energy
transition is carried out and who will pay the costs. The energy
transition, driven mainly by large companies, foundations and
governments from the global North and emerging countries towards
supposedly "clean" energies, puts increasing pressure on the
global South. For China, the United States and Europe to move
towards defossilization, new sacrifice zones are created in the
       world's peripheries.
There are several examples of this dynamic: the extraction of

and lithium for the production of
high-tech batteries for electric cars brutally affects the
       so-called “lithium triangle” in Latin America and North Africa;
The growing demand for balsa wood – abundant in the Ecuadorian
Amazon – for the construction of wind turbines demanded by China
and European countries destroys communities, territories and
biodiversity; and the new push for megaprojects of solar panels
and hydrogen infrastructure further increases land grabbing.

This process is beginning to be known, in activism and critical
academia, as "green extractivism" or "energy colonialism": a new
dynamic of capitalist extraction and appropriation of raw
materials, natural goods and labor, especially in the South.
globally (although not exclusively), with the purpose of
carrying out the green energy transition. In this article we
argue that energy colonialism is the centerpiece of a new
capitalist consensus, which we will define as the
"Decarbonization Consensus . " This is a global agreement that
is committed to changing the energy matrix based on fossil fuels
to one without (or with reduced) carbon emissions, based on
       "renewable" energies.
