Storing water in plastic for long periods causes diarrhea leads
to bacterial growth & microplastics also bad for pets

Storing water in plastic for long periods can cause diarrhea if
it leads to bacterial growth from improper storage (e.g.,
leaving the bottle open). Additionally, extreme heat (like in a
hot car) can break down the plastic, potentially leaching
chemicals that cause digestive issues
COMMENT: I'm learning this the hard way! I underestimated this.
I am having plumbing problems and had a whole lot of leftover
water I had stored in giant thick plastic pretzel containers and
few other plastic containers from this winter.
I was in emergency conditions and thought it was okay to drink
the stored water because it smelled okay but that idea backfired
on me.
I had just an evening maybe a time span of a few hours of
diarrhea after drinking from one of the flimsy plastic
containers of stored water.. my little dog started itching but
had no fleas...I felt awful and terrified and guilty ...I
quickly recovered so far I appear extremely lucky so far as I
have somehow recovered quickly within hours of not drinking it
anymore. I believe drinking water from the plastic made my dog
itch .. maybe I had stored the water for half a year maybe it
was the water from the yogurt containers or other flimsy
containers that went bad... not really sure but I saw symptoms
after drinking from a fairly large yet flimsy plastic container.
It took me awhile to put two and two together so for a few hours
of me having moderate stomach problems my dog was also itching
like it had fleas ..finally dawned on me it might be the water
from old plastic containers!
I did learned I can boil the water and run it through a coffee
filter to help greatly reduce these micro plastics. I did that
for late evening and morning but this is tough. I'm fine now. I
got over it fast no more stomach problems and Dogs not itching
as much but nevertheless this is super scary. Just ordered a
dozen gallons of fresh water from Walmart and also ordered some
device that filters out bacteria and micro plastics.
Anyway don't be like me and underestimate the dangers of water
stored in old plastic... I really think bioplastics leeching
into water poisoned me a little like allergic reaction ..that's
what it seems like. Ive been fine all day since I started
boiling and filtering it but I just ordered fresh water so I'm
going to to drink fresh water soon...I seemed to recover quickly
but its nothing to play around with!

Does boiling help?Boiling water for 1 to 3 minutes will kill
harmful pathogens and bacteria that cause diarrhea. Furthermore,
studies show that boiling hard water can naturally trap and
remove up to 90% of microplastics when the minerals (calcium
carbonate) settle to the bottom.
However, boiling will not remove chemicals that have already
leached out of degraded plastic.
To prevent contamination, consider these tips:
Store properly: Keep water in food-grade plastic or glass
containers in a cool, dark place.
Avoid heat: Do not store water in plastic bottles in hot
environments, like cars or direct sunlight.
Filter: To remove plastics trapped during boiling, pour the
cooled water through a simple coffee filter."
...Nevertheless: reducing 90% pf micro plastics just isn't good
enough for me I'm ordering a special device to reduce micro
plastics 99.999% along with fresh water and new jugs so that I
can survive while fixing well water and plumbing. My little dog
seems much better not itching nearly as much but I feel so
stupid and so guilty and never want to risk this micro plastic
or bacteria thing again! I think the worst is over.. Whew, its
bad enough not having running water! ..I'm thinking we got off
lucky so far anyway. I haven't had any stomach problems all day
and finally the dog isn't itching much.. must be some sort of
toxins that passed though. This stuff can prove serious..again I
think I somehow got burnt a little merely scathed and somehow
dodged the bullet. You never can tell or know but the odds I
escaped more serious bacteria infections are in my favor for
now.
(Now its back to sponge bath, waiting for the delivery of water
so I can chug a gallon down , get a few buckets of water from
creek so I can flush the toilets.. soon we'll have fresh water
and even the water filter gizmo that takes micro plastics out!
Its not so bad once I get that fresh water in me again! If I get
ambitious besides learning plumbing, I do have a rain barrel I
never set up and a little waterfall and creek out back that I
can use for stuff besides consuming water... Rather than letting
the plumbing and well get to me I take advantage of the living
semi-off the grid challenge ...Its a learning experience for me.
Ive got money but if I play my cards right and take my time to
be safe I can learn and try to do all the plumbing myself and
also have the power to supply myself with water regardless of
electricity or well! ) :)
UPDATE(Friday night): Ah dog is taking it easy as usual with
very little itching ..he just grooming a little . whew I'm glad
cause he's my buddy .. I just drank a ton of fresh water and
cleaned and filled his bowl with fresh water as well as fresh
water for cats upstairs ..whew live and learn ...we don't mess
around taking chances on drinking water from old plastic
containers ..that micro plastics stuff is for real!.
