North Carolina's first West Nile virus illness of 2026 reported:
       health officials
       August 5, 2026

RALEIGH, N.C. (WLOS) — The first case of disease associated with
West Nile virus in North Carolina in 2026 has been identified,
       state health officials announced.
In a press release Wednesday, the North Carolina Department of
Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) said it is investigating the
case, which occurred in a Gaston County resident. A West Nile
virus-positive blood donor in Mecklenburg County was also
identified through a routine screening, the department said.
The NCDHHS said its Laboratory of Public Health also identified
West Nile Virus in "multiple mosquitoes" collected in Cabarrus,
Forsyth and Mecklenburg counties in July.

NYC Health Department Detects Increase in Mosquitos with West
Nile Virus Across New York City
August 6, 2026 — The New York City Health Department announced
today that West Nile virus has been detected in nearly twice as
many mosquito pools as this time last year and is urging New
Yorkers to take simple precautions to protect themselves from
       mosquito bites.
Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus are present in New York City
every year from June through October, with activity typically
peaking during August and September. The virus spreads to people
through the bite of an infected mosquito. While no human cases
have been reported in New York City this season, cases are
typically seen between mid-July and early fall.

COMMENT: Yikes! I Just sprayed bug repellent on the collar and
cuffs and edges of jean jacket I wear at night to take the trash
out or the dog for walk! Think I'll spray a tad of bug repellent
on my cowboy hat rim too! I live in the mountains of North
Carolina by a creek and have survived floods, feral cats
scratch, trees falling on my roof, blizzards ..man, I've
survived everything.. I'll be damned if a little mosquito cuts
       me down to size!
I walk around in my tall grass and weeds with a headlamp on and
the air is filled with a universe of tiny flying creatures
dancing in the air in my head lamp's light! Cats are hiding in
the bushes, there's bats out there, toads are hopping out of my
path. got spiderwebs everywhere..watched two spiders working
their magic in web under front porch light tons of bugs in their
web quite amazing..yeah bugs are zipping around... I just adapt
modify my lifestyle , my clothing, a cane just incase a feral
cat mistakes my leg for a mate, tall boots, and behaviors so as
to live amongst it. A little bug spray on my clothing ought to
       hopefully do the trick..
My backyard and front yard is a dangerous jungle or rather a
temperate forest not designed for human comfort or
convenience..If people were to wear masks to help prevent
airborne illness and diseases like me perhaps I would make my
territory more accommodating but alas locally I have no peers..
there is no one willing to mask here so therefore no one worthy
to enter Masked Man and Masked Woman's premises ..so there's
thorns, poisonous hemlock plants you don't wanna get on your
skin...even my little dog wears a leather jacket when I
momentarily set him onto the ground to go the bathroom on a
leash next to the dangerous waterfall where I have seen vicious
raccoons ...and The Masked Man likes it that way... you just
have to protect yourself and take precautions and then its kind
of fascinating and full of wonder with all the creatures and
nature and overgrowth. I actually registered my backyard with a
NC wildlife habitat program and I adopted the creek to keep
       people out and nature in.
