       It’s time to treat pandemics as threats to national security
       A national security mindset can help prevent and minimize the
       damage of future pandemics
       Pandemics like the great influenza of 1918-1919 and Covid-19 are
       often viewed and treated as health care challenges. That view,
       however, is far too narrow. They should be viewed and combated
       as threats to national security, too.

       I can not disagree.
       Prevention is, by far, more cost-effective than crisis
       management. While there will always be events that society can
       not anticipate ("there is a first time for everything"), we can
       already anticipate a lot, such as yearly influxes of influenza.
       It is disheartening that a large segment of our population is
       resistant to the idea of mass prevention efforts, such as
       mandatory vaccinations or the wearing of N95 masks during
       traditional "flu season." The cost for these efforts is far
       cheaper than dealing with the consequences.
       A simple analogy is all one needs - A lottery is where you spend
       $1 dollar for the remote chance of winning $1 million. Disease
       prevention is like spending $1 dollar in order to prevent the
       chance of spending $1 million dollars. And just like a lottery
       where you can win multiple times, the lack of disease prevention
       means that a society could "lose" multiple times as well.
       And the losses just aren't monetary but, obviously, extend to
       mortality as well. What is the cost for spending one more
       birthday with loved ones?
       It is unfortunate that the majority of society has not heeded
       the lessons learned from our prior pandemics which shall make
       the next one all the more deadlier.
